Former Klamath County District Attorney Ed Caleb dies Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jan. 30, 2015 at 3:51 PM Posted Jan. 30, 2015 at 3:51 PM » Social News from the Klamath Falls Herald and News Ed Caleb, former Klamath County district attorney, died Thursday evening. Caleb announced his retirement in late 2012 after 27 years as DA. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease with Lewy body dementia, the second most common form of dementia after Alzheimer's disease, which causes a progressive decline in mental abilities. "It's a loss for the whole community," said Debbie Vought, executive director of Citizens for Safe Schools, which Caleb helped found. Vought said Caleb shared her passion in making sure children in the community have adults who support them. "I have rarely seen a man love his children as much as Ed loved his children," Vought said. "I am so inspired by that." Former Klamath County Sheriff Tim Evinger said he will cherish his memories of his time spent with Caleb both professionally and personally. “I learned a lot from Ed,” Evinger said. “He's always been bigger than life and always seemed immortal to me.” Caleb's passing was not a surprise, and many friends were able to see him last week. Klamath County Commissioner Kelley Minty-Morris, who was previously the communications and outreach manager for Citizens for Safe Schools, echoed Vought's comments about Caleb. “This is really hard news for so many of us in the community who counted him as a friend and a mentor,” Minty-Morris said. In 2001, Caleb refused federal agents’ demands to arrest demonstrators during the water shutoff. In 2004, he formed the Methamphetamine Task Force and released a comprehensive report on the meth issue in Klamath County. In 2006, he petitioned to get Jessica’s Law enacted. In 2009, he went to great lengths to keep a convicted killer from being paroled. Caleb worked over the years to help vulnerable Klamath County populations by creating the Citizens for Safe Schools program, the Elder Abuse Task Force and the Domestic Violence Reduction Unit. He supervised the Klamath County Major Crime Team in the investigation and conviction of murderers and sex offenders.
