The Comets defeated Eagle Point, North Medford and South Medford in their two-inning matchups. North Medford defeated South Medford and Eagle Point, while South Medford defeated Eagle Point. "It was good to get out on a nice day and see some competition," Crater coach Chuck Dominiak said. "It was nice to do something other than practice for a change. Panthers split softball double-dip South Medford divided its season-opening softball doubleheader against Marshfield Monday at Fagone Field. Not a bad start for the Panthers, considering 20 of the 36 players in the program faced the prospect of academic ineligibility a week ago. Most of the players managed to make the grade, but the consequences lingered heading into Monday's opener. "We thought we might have to cancel the JV games just to have enough players to play varsity," South coach Duke Mondale said. "Last Wednesday, I said we're going with the group that's here on Monday. That meant we played a lot of young kids on for the first four innings." Marshfield took advantage of eight South errors in winning the opener 7-1, while South bounced back for a 5-2 triumph in the nightcap. "Four of the errors came in the seventh inning," Mondale said. "That was after we put our varsity players in. We basically played with a JV infield for a while and they did pretty well." Marshfield scored four runs in the first three innings to give winning pitcher Sally Wiedeman all the runs she needed. South Medford senior center fielder Leslie Bucher had two hits in three at-bats. In the nightcap, junior pitcher Wendy Foster blanked the Pirates for six innings and drove in three runs. South scored five times on two hits and four walks in the bottom of the fourth inning. Foster ripped a one-out, bases-loaded triple off counterpart Emily Csoros to make it 4-0. Foster struck out eight and walked seven before being relieved in the seventh.
