Henley captured the boys and girls titles. The top two individuals in each event and those who meet qualifying standards advance to the state meet, set for May 21-23 at the University of Oregon. Phoenix’s Emma Hickman set a personal record and won the shot put (38 feet, 8 inches) and recorded a season-best to win the discus (125-2). The Pirates’ 4x100-meter relay team (Audrey Hazel, Lindsey Burns, Danielle Jantzer and Sydney Amundsen) and 4x400 relay squad (Burns, Jantzer, Nevina De Luca and Hazel) were both fastest. Hazel was first in the 200 (26.41 seconds), while her time of 59.51 in the 400 was a school record and good for second. Burns was victorious in the 300 hurdles (49.06) and Amundsen third in the 1,500. On the boys side, the Pirates were led by Jacob Bergren’s second-place performance in the 800 (2:00.04) and Randy Mena’s second-place effort in the 1,500 (4:15.52). SCL DISTRICT: At Rogue River, Cascade Christian and St. Mary’s earned multiple state berths during the opening day of the Southern Cascade League district meet. For Cascade Christian, finals winners were Sophia Sellers (high jump), Cheyenne Auchard (discus), Kara Ash (long jump), Tim McPherson (3,000 meters) and Dante Olson (shot put). Trudy Burns was second in the javelin. For St. Mary’s, Marissa Dobry was fastest in the 3,000 finals, while Harley Cheunjit (long jump), Sarah Settimo (long jump) and Josh Martin (shot put) were all second. Softball SOUTH MEDFORD 9-6, WILLAMETTE 1-2: At Eugene, South Medford racked up 29 hits en route to the Southwest Conference sweep. Pat Moore improved to 21-5 after tossing a two-hitter with 17 strikeouts and three walks and a five-hitter with 15 strikeouts and six walks for the Panthers (21-5, 16-5 SWC), who finished in third place in the conference. In the opener, Hannah Newman was 4-for-5 with six RBIs, Jewel Burgoyne-Russell 3-for-4 and Krystal Williams 2-for-5 with three runs. Moore went 2-for-5 with two runs, Hannah Smith was 2-for-4 and Rachael Moore scored three runs. In Game 2, Williams finished 2-for-3 with two runs, Newman was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Rachael Moore and Burgoyne-Russell each added two hits. In the opener, Gillian Willis went 4-for-5 with seven RBIs, Kylene Briggs 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs and Kayli Meerten 3-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs for the Eagles (19-5, 13-5 MWL), who wrapped up league play. Miyah Smith was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and four runs and Paige Leeper and Kenzie Nielsen were both 2-for-3, while Corie Dodge added a solo home run. In Game 2, Briggs was 3-for-4 with a homer, two RBIs and three runs and Meerten, Leeper, Ayres and Shae Grady each recorded two hits. Ayres improved to 17-5 after tossing the one-hit shutout with five strikeouts and one walk against Springfield (1-23, 0-18) in the second game. Boys Tennis MIDWESTERN DISTRICT: At Eugene, Ashland advanced five to next week's state tournament and won the Midwestern League crown. The Grizzlies’ Mischa Kirby beat Ridgeview’s Brent Blundell, 6-0, 6-3 in the semifinals before falling to Churchill’s Nathan Hampton, 6-1, 6-1, in the finals. In doubles action, Ashland’s Rox Rogers and Nur Shelton defeated teammates Kai Weston and David Lee, 7-6, 6-1, in the semifinals. In the third-place match, Lee and Weston beat a Marist opponent, 7-6, 6-4. In the finals, Marist’s Austin Tyner and AJ Bartko topped Rogers and Shelton, 6-0, 6-1. Ashland won the team title with 34 points. Girls Tennis MIDWESTERN DISTRICT: At Eugene, the top-seeded Ashland pairing of Vika O’Brien and Anne Kim cruised to the Midwestern League crown, and singles player Ashley Knecht also secured a state berth after finishing runner-up. O’Brien and Kim beat Ridgeview’s Caitlin Carr and Sierra Cassaro, 6-4, 6-2, in the final. The Grizzly combo won their semifinal, 6-1, 6-0. Knecht, seeded second, beat Renee Lee of Marist, 6-0, 6-0, in the semifinals before falling to Marist’s Madisyn Bryant, 6-1, 6-0, in the title match. Marist won the team title with 43 points, followed by Ridgeview (23) and Ashland (22). DISTRICT 3: At Redmond, Cascade Christian’s Nicole Morse qualified for the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A state tournament next week after advancing to the District 3 semifinals. Morse, the top seed, swept St. Mary’s Sarah Loftin, 6-0, 6-0, in the quarterfinals. In second-round doubles, the Challengers’ Cassidi Kammerzell and Alli Winter beat Marshfield’s Maddy Suppes and Sareal Strain, 6-2, 6-2. The Cascade Christian combo then fell to Henley’s Paige Hahn and Vanessa Matheson in the quarterfinals, 6-0, 6-0. Semifinals and finals are today.
