Our streams and rivers are warming and that isn’t good for the fish. We are having record heat waves in the summer. So why has the Oregon Board of Forestry decided that the Siskiyou streams are exempt from statewide stream protections? The rest of the state has to abide by the rule that the smaller no-logging buffers around fish-bearing streams will be 60-80 feet. Why have they decided that 20 feet is adequate here? Our streams and rivers are already on a state DEQ list as being too warm for salmon habitat. We have a chance to protect the fish and our rivers and streams. Email Gov. Kate Brown to reject the Oregon Board of Forestry decision that our streams are exempt. Water isn’t abundant here, let us protect what we have for ourselves and the fish. Go to Oregon.gov . Carol Palmer Medford Dams are beneficial I have been reading with great interest the articles on the Klamath Basin Restoration Agreement and the potential removal of four dams. I noticed how much verbiage is given to how this will benefit the salmon, which will benefit the Indians. Also, read about how this may affect the irrigators in the area and the potential problems for Pacific Power. I have not seen much, if any discussion on whom this may also affect, in a big negative way: us, the rate payers. Let’s first address an issue that will affect all who use electricity. All four dams produce clean renewable electrical power and nowhere have I heard where the power will come from once these clean renewable power generators will be destroyed and what the cost to the ratepayer is going to be. The trend I see here is there are groups that don’t like fossil fuel, nuclear or clean renewable hydroelectric generating plants. But wait, I have an idea. Let’s take all that the hot air coming from those groups and use it to turn hot air turbines. There is no lack of this hot air source and it is renewable and may be somewhat clean. Cliff Geddis Trail Finally getting serious Despite the lies, ignorance, greed, and reckless disregard for life of Republican politicians and other obstructionists, the nations of the world are finally getting serious about a united response to climate change. I am particularly heartened by the leadership of indigenous peoples such as Clayton Thomas-Muller, of the Mathias Colomb Cree Nation (Pukatawagan) in Northern Manitoba. In a speech on global warming he poignantly stated, "Failure to act on these issues and failure to really look at the big picture is like committing a passive act of violence against future generations." Demand responsible public policy, now! Dave Garcia Medford A game for Oregonians I have played the Oregon Lottery ever since I moved here in 1988. From what I have read regarding the Megabucks game, it is strictly an Oregon game. If this is the case, why are people in foreign countries able to purchase Megabucks tickets? In my opinion, that is what has always been referred to as "offshore betting." I called the Lottery office prior to the person who won showing up to collect his winnings of $6.4 million and was told the winner was from Oregon. I can't recall if they said Portland or Eugene. Doesn't matter at this point but having someone from Iraq win, that is just too far-fetched. An Oregon game should be just that, not worldwide. Ruth Davis Medford Test the candidates I believe it would be useful if candidates for national office took the test given to people applying for citizenship. I would love to see one of the debates be replaced with a review of the candidates' test results. Some of the proposals currently capturing a lot of headlines are questionable in their legality. Some candidates seem to believe the president is endowed with the ability to issue royal edicts without due process. This process would be educational for the candidates and voters alike. J.
