Anna May Family Foundation awards 12 grants By Jonel Aleccia The Anna May Family Foundation of Medford has awarded nearly $60,000 to a dozen local nonprofit groups for projects ranging from a homeless shelter and vocational education to a graffiti eradication program. The funds are part of an estimated $150,000 given annually from the $4 million foundation created at the direction of Anna May, a Medford accountant who died last year at age 71. Funds will be distributed to the following agencies: - The Arts Council of Southern Oregon, Medford: $3,750 for cultural enrichment and leadership development for at-risk students in certain Central Point elementary schools; - The Community Health Center, Medford: $5,000 for urgent prescription medication assistance; - Helman Elementary School, Ashland: $1,000 to initiate an emergency fund for needy students; - Eagle Point High School, Eagle Point: $8,500 to assure continuation of a new, alternative vocational education program in partnership with the Rogue Valley Community Development Corporation; - Kids Unlimited, Medford: $5,000 for the Graffiti Redirection Project, which allows at-risk teens to work with law enforcement and other agencies to develop solutions to vandalism and graffiti in West Medford; - La Clinica del Valle, Phoenix: $10,000 for a bilingual family advocate to work with the families of 200 children to prevent neglect and abuse; - The Multicultural Association of Southern Oregon, Medford: $5,000 for the summer 2001 Multicultural Kids Camp; - The Salvation Army, Medford: $7,500 to offset an unexpected budget shortfall and help fund a homeless transitional shelter; - Society of St. Vincent DePaul, Medford: $2,000 to expand to kindergartners an annual program that provides school supplies to needy children in Jackson County; - Southern Oregon University Youth Programs, Ashland: $5,000 to initiate the Hispanic/Latino Youth Academy for Jackson County middle school students during the summer of 2001; - West Medford Community Coalition: $1,600 to initiate the Street Scene Sports Program for neighborhoods without nearby recreational areas, performed in collaboration with the Medford Police Department; - Wilderness Trails, Medford: $4,800 for wilderness and camping experiences for at-risk youth.
