He chooses to ignore the fire risks through Southern Oregon and the earthquake and tsunami inevitability in Coos Bay. He also seems unaware that the majority of jobs are not permanent. It will be a boom-and-bust situation complete with a temporary “man-town” in North Bend. This clearly is not thinking of future generations. And since Mr. Horner brought up our forefathers, I think they would not be making divisive comments (as Mr. Horner has). Rather, they would be rallying as hundreds of Oregonians representing 15 counties did on Sept. 26 in Coos Bay. We are united in our opposition to the pipeline. We are here, Standing Up For Oregon! Mr. Horner and others are invited to learn more about the proposed pipeline and port facilities from Coos Bay residents here: http://citizensagainstlng.com/wp/ Jaymie Exley Jacksonville Drought is a normal cycle According to the Oct 10 "100 Years Ago" column: "The experience of the past two years of comparative drought should convince the most skeptical of the need for water ... There is no assurance that the coming year will not be as dry as the past two seasons, and that cycles of dry seasons may not occur in the future." It seems that 100 years ago the region was also having a period of drought. Thank you Mail Tribune for confirming that weather patterns do change and can result in periods of drought. Jeff Fox Medford LNG not the solution Recently, I visited friends at the coast near Coos Bay. We drove to the town to get an overview of Jordan Cove, where a Canadian company wants to build their huge LNG industrial facility on a sand bar, enlarged with more sand dredged from the bay to deepen it for ocean-going ships transporting liquefied natural gas to Asia. To anyone who watched coverage of the devastating tsunami in Japan, or the recent program on PBS clarifying potential damage to coastal cities along the Cascadia Subduction Zone, it is impossible to ignore the destruction and tragedy that could await their citizens. Coos Bay is no exception. The city is flat a long way inland, and its bay is free rein for a massive tsunami to wipe it out. Anyone who has lived in earthquake zones, or even been knocked down by a sneaker wave, has a modicum of experience of what the earth and sea can do. As an outsider, Coos Bay looked in need of an economic solution. Oregon state agencies could help find one: perhaps a first class destination marina which, in the event of a natural or industrial disaster, would not putrefy the land. Gail Beason Talent Sick of pot stories As a subscriber of many years, I have read a lot of good stories in your paper, but I am sick to death of your pot stories — over and over and over again. Isn't there some better news to cover? Come on! And big pictures with shorter stories make for a waste of space.
