Dennis Patrick Swift, of the 600 block of Caves Highway, appeared in court on felony charges of first-degree sexual abuse and first-degree unlawful sexual penetration. He was being held late Wednesday in the Jackson County Jail on $500,000 bail, state court records show. Swift was arrested Tuesday afternoon by Medford police, who conducted an initial investigation into allegations that he victimized a 6-year-old child acquainted with his family, Medford police Sgt. Brett Johnson said. First-degree unlawful sexual penetration carries a mandatory minimum prison term of eight years and four months upon conviction, according to state sentencing guidelines. First-degree sexual abuse carries a mandatory minimum sentence of six years and three months upon conviction. Swift pleaded not guilty in October to felony drug charges in Multnomah County, court records show. That case has not yet been resolved. In 1986, Swift was convicted in Jackson County of first-degree burglary, according to court records.
