Fire crews also reported another 15 percent jump in the percentage of containment on the lightning-sparked Crescent and National fires, saying the 13,211-acre complex is 40 percent contained. Park officials urge motorists in the area to use caution when driving in the park. There could still be some fires along the roadside, producing visibility-limiting smoke. Drivers are urged to slow down, drive with their lights on and be on the lookout for firefighters or equipment in the area. "Do not stop to watch the fire or take photos, and never pull off the pavement," a message on Crater Lake's Facebook page reads. Park officials said safe viewpoints for fire and smoke photos include the North Junction, Diamond Lake and Watchman overlooks. Fire crews remain optimistic heading into the weekend, as the National Weather Service predicts rain throughout southwestern Oregon, including Crater Lake. Up to three-quarters of an inch is expected over the Cascades, the Siskiyous and the Umpqua and Illinois valleys. Up to a quarter-inch is expected to fall over the Rogue Valley, including Medford. Showers were expected to fall Friday night into Sunday morning. High temperatures are expected to drop below normal this weekend, weather officials said, to between 70 and 80 degrees. The lightning-sparked National Creek complex has been burning on the northwest boundary of Crater Lake National Park and the Rogue River-Siskiyou and Umpqua national forests since Aug. 1. A segment of the Pacific Crest Trail, which runs from the northern park boundary to the junction with Lightning Springs Trail, remains closed.
