Dec. 24, 1915 CHRISTMAS "The Passing of the Third Floor Back," as presented by Forbes-Robertson, was the best play possible to present at the Christmas season. Its moral is to look for the best in people and you will find it — for there is good in everyone, no matter how much it may be hidden by the sham, hypocrisy and sordidness of worldliness. No one could view the play without broadening, no matter how transiently, the outlook on life; it is a simple drama that holds up the mirror of ourselves and brings the blush of shame for our own unworthiness. It preaches the need of kindliness to humanity, that like begets like, and that we receive in proportion as we give, more effectively than pulpit ever preached. Christmas is the one season in the year when we strive to be really Christian, to treat our brothers as we should ourselves liked to be treated. It is a season of beautiful things — of beautiful thoughts, of beautiful gifts and beautiful deeds. We express our individual ideas of beauty somehow on Christmas day. Christmas permits us to manifest our eternal need — the desires to be a little better, a little kinder, a little wiser as we grow a little older. It enables us to express our notion of the good, the true, the beautiful, without embarrassment. What a pity that every day cannot be Christmas, that we do spend our energy in giving rather than in futile efforts to reap where we have not sown, that we do not drop our handicap of selfishness to make the world as beautiful and life as wonderful as the Creator made it. SOCIETY Miss Beth Stewart entertained the Girls Sewing club at her home on North Oakdale avenue Monday evening. The house was decorated with Christmas colors and greenery, and needlework, conversation and phonograph music were enjoyed after which a dainty luncheon was served. A Christmas tree and Santa Claus were used for the centerpiece in the table decorations. Those present were the Misses Florence and Alice Johnson, Verna and Zoe Griffin, Beth Blackford and Beth Stewart.
