They added that, while not generallydone in the Rogue Valley, it is often done in Eastern Oregon. Is pumping your own diesel fuel actually legal? -Clyde J., Jacksonville Pumping your own diesel fuel is perfectly legal in Oregon, Clyde.But just because it's legal doesn't always mean it's allowed. Anita Phillips, compliance services manager for the state firemarshal, said different stations have different policies regarding self-service of diesel. That most likelyaccounts for the different practices in stations in the Rogue Valley and those in Eastern Oregon. There are a couple reasons stations do not allow customers to pumptheir own diesel. One is that other customers may not realize pumping diesel is legal. Also, it may bedifficult to see that a person is pumping diesel and not gasoline. Either scenario could lead to complaintsthat many stations would rather avoid. Another reason is liability. If somebody is injured pumpingdiesel, the station might be held liable. Oregonians voted to make self-service of gasoline illegal in 1951.Phillips said self-service of diesel is legal partially because diesel is not as easily ignited as gasoline.
