Janky made a long dash with the ball, beat a pair of defenders and outmaneuvered the West Salem goalkeeper to put the Black Tornado ahead for good. Michala Denn headed in a corner kick by Sarah Thomas in the eighth minute for North, which advanced to the 2014 state finals after edging the Titans in a penalty-kick shootout. Tualatin won the 6A crown last fall, beating the Tornado, 2-0. On Friday, West Salem evened the score at 1 in the 32nd minute. Savannah Bumgardner scored from 12 yards out after solid passes by Janky and Rylee Karrick to give North (2-0-1) its 3-1 lead in the 60th minute. The Tornado's backline of Meghan Cowan, Sarah Thomas, Denn and freshman Mileka Hagerman was strong, head coach Jeff Thomas said. "They are the foundation of the team," he said. Brinley O'Neill and Melissa Tonkin shared duties in-goal against West Salem (3-1). Boys Soccer WEST SALEM 3, SOUTH MEDFORD 2: At Salem, Kyle Owings had both South Medford goals during nonleague action. He scored in the 15th and 45th minutes, giving the Panthers (1-1-1) a 2-0 lead. His first goal came on an assist from Jon Peregrina, and his second came after he stole the ball from the goalkeeper. West Salem (3-1) scored all three of its goals in the match’s final 10 minutes. Josue Reyes was strong defensively in a match marked by yellow cards. Volleyball CRATER 3, NORTH EUGENE 1: At Eugene, Destiny Fahndrich powered Crater’s Midwestern League victory with 17 kills, 15 digs and three aces. Comets setter Cassidy Layton piled up 45 assists and six digs and Nicole Morse registered nine kills, 14 digs and four aces. Freshman defensive specialist Rane Jensen also came up with 13 digs for the Comets (2-1, 1-1 MWL). SPRINGFIELD 3, EAGLE POINT 0: At Springfield, Springfield won the Midwestern League opener, 25-21, 25-19, 25-21. Kirsten Pariani had six kills and seven digs, Megan Ayres four kills and five assists and Michaela Morris eight assists and four aces for the Eagles (0-5, 0-1 MWL). MARIST 3, ASHLAND 0: At Eugene, Marist swept, 25-16, 25-20, 25-16, during Midwestern League action. Olivia Rooney had 10 kills and five digs, Karlie Richardson 21 assists, six kills and five digs and Ellie Case seven kills for Ashland (5-1, 2-0 MWL). Marist improved to 6-2 overall, 1-1 in league.
