Michael Dean McCarty, 31, was taken down with the help of a stun gun and pepper spray at the Medford Center Tuesday evening and arrested on warrants charging him with failing to appear to face charges of methamphetamine possession, second-degree escape, providing false information to police, resisting arrest, interfering with police and initiating a false report. He was lodged in the Jackson County Jail with his bail set at $39,000. He was still in jail Thursday when Medford police added new charges linked to a Tuesday fraud report that first set officers on McCarty's trail. Tellers at Bank of America at 790 Stevens St., Medford, called police around 4:40 p.m. Tuesday about a fraud suspect in the branch. Bank employees identified McCarty, who had already fled on foot, and police discovered that he had several warrants out for his arrest. Subsequent work by Medford police's Financial Investigation Section determined that McCarty allegedly tried to pass a stolen check at the bank Tuesday. Police said the check belonged to a 55-year-old man whose briefcase was stolen April 20 when he set it down near his parked car in the 400 block of East Main Street. The man's checkbook was inside the briefcase. Over the next several days, McCarty allegedly cashed several checks around Medford, leading to a flagging on the victim's bank account. When McCarty wrote a $940 check to himself and presented valid identification to cash it at the Bank of America Tuesday, employees realized it was fraud and tried to stall McCarty as they called police. Although he had left the bank by the time officers arrived at 4:42 p.m. Tuesday, police located McCarty in a nearby Safeway and pursued him when he ran off. Officers caught up and tried to arrest McCarty but he resisted arrest, they say, "sometimes kicking wildly," according to a Medford police news release. The agency said McCarty also tried unsuccessfully to grab an officer's stun gun. The officers struck McCarty multiple times and used pepper spray and the stun gun before taking him into custody. The scuffle left McCarty with cuts and abrasions. He was taken to Providence Medford Medical Center, where he was treated before being released back to police.
