The Jackson County Sheriff's Department said William James Frye, 28, had been handling a .22-caliber revolver in the 8300 block of Division Road in White City Saturday evening. Lt. Christine Bronson said Frye thought the weapon was unloaded when he pointed it at his head and pulled the trigger. The gun discharged, and he was struck in the head. Police and medical personnel responded to the home at 5:41 p.m. Frye was transported to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center in critical condition. He died Sunday morning, though an exact time was not available. Sheriff's officials said one person witnessed the shooting. Police said Frye had been the only person handling the weapon. The death has been ruled accidental, but the case remains under investigation and has been sent to the medical examiner for review.
