Wortman pulled off the biggest surprise of the Southern Oregon Golf Championships to highlight Saturday’s action, using a carefree attitude and a wicked putter to take down medalist Jimmy White in the men’s championship flight quarterfinals at Rogue Valley Country Club. “I kinda felt today that I didn’t really have anything to lose so I could just go out there and try to win,” said Wortman, who is an incoming junior at Mazama High. “I ended up doing that so (in today’s semifinals) I’m going to have the same mentality, I’ve got nothing to lose.” The left-handed Wortman was 6 up with six holes to play before White finally turned it on to win three straight holes and make things interesting. On the 17th, however, the golfers halved the hole with a pair of tricky 3-footers to allow Wortman to advance with a 2 and 1 victory at the 85th annual event. On Tuesday, White set a qualifying record and matched the RVCC course record set by Mike Barry in 2010 with a 12-under-par 60. The former professional golfer who competed three years on minitours after capping his career at the University of Oregon just didn’t have the same swing working for him Saturday. “I was struggling off the tee and couldn’t get close or make putts,” said White, who was chasing his first SOGC title. “Bryce did a really good job. He made everything he needed to make, kudos to him for sure.” The atmosphere doesn’t get any less tense for Wortman, who will match up with Barry — a three-time SOGC champion — in today’s semifinals after the former North Medford High and Oregon State standout knocked off last year’s runner-up Ryan Hawkins, 6 and 4. The other men’s championship flight semifinal features three-time defending champion Kevin Murphy, who topped Noah Brooks 6 and 5, against Alex Street, who was a 3-and-2 winner over Montana Frame. The final foursome will tee off at 12:40 p.m. today. In other championship flight action on Saturday, Kevin Klabunde maintained hopes of a third junior/senior men’s title with a 3 and 2 win, while Brent Barr, Steve Taormino and Marty Morlan also advanced. In senior men’s action, Mike Finnell edged two-time defending champion Mark Wilson (1 up) and will face Marshall Holman, who topped Bob Cox 1 up, in the semifinals. Brad Bills won on the 19th hole against Jerry Eklund and will face Glen Clark, who beat Bryan Schlafke 1 up. In the super senior men’s division, Terry Anderson and Dan Dixon each advanced to the finals with 2-and-1 wins over Bob Harrell and Gregory Miller, respectively. Defending women’s champion Terry Levis advanced with a 1 up win over Calista Crenshaw and will square off with two-time champion Kelly Loeb in the semifinals after she topped another former champion, Amanda Nealy, 5 and 4 on Saturday. Trina Jones, who won the 2008 title, won 1 up against Jessica Young and will face Rosie Cook, who beat Reena Bernardo 3 and 2, in the semis. LaVone Kirkwood, Alice Hunt, Allison Myers and Deb Stewart all advanced in the senior women’s championship flight. Wortman took the upper hand against White by draining a 20-foot putt on the sixth hole. He backed that up with a 5-foot slider on No. 7 and then got up-and-down for a birdie on No. 8. A 30-footer on a downhill chaser at No. 9 really got Wortman pumped and when White three-putted the 10th hole to let him steal another hole, the damage had been done. “When I get my putter going it’s almost like a cart tire is the hole,” said Wortman, “and I was telling my caddie, ‘I’m making everything,’ and he was just saying back, ‘I think you’re gonna too.’ We were able to get such an advantage because the putter was going. I think it was because the greens really sped up and firmed up for me, that made chipping easier for me and putting a lot easier to see the lines.” “It’s great fun when you can start playing even better than you’re thinking that you’re going to play,” he added. Even though this is Wortman’s first appearance in the SOGC, the Klamath Falls teen is very familiar with the RVCC course. Six weeks ago he won the boys open division at the Southern Oregon Junior played at RVCC, finishing at 5-under 139 for the two-day event. “I really like the course and it’s in even better shape than it is for the junior tournament, so this is fun,” said Wortman, who tied for the Class 4A state title as a freshman and placed third this past spring. White’s best move Saturday was in essentially believing the match was over after the 13th hole and telling Wortman, “Good job,” before realizing the match, in fact, was dormie. White reeled off impressive wins on hole Nos. 14-16 to retain some hope, playing almost flawless while Wortman searched to find a knockout blow before ultimately matching shots on the 17th. “I think I kinda threw him off there a little bit because honestly I thought I was already done,” said White. “I think he kind of got out of rhythm and I made a few putts is all, but he kind of had it in the bag. I think he just let me have a few is all.” Even with his cushion slowly diminishing toward the end, Wortman maintained his demeanor. “It was fun,” he said of matching up with White. “He’s a great competitor and I really am honored to say that I beat him and that he didn’t give up either. He didn’t roll over, he really tried to get it done all the way to the last hole. He almost got it to 18 but I was able to make that 3-footer coming in to end it.” Wortman’s opponent today, Barry, didn’t have quite as many big moments on Saturday but he was able to do just enough to upend Hawkins on the 14th hole. “We both were scrambling quite a bit today,” said Barry, whose titles were won in 2007, ’08 and ’10. “That’s the funny thing about match play, if I were playing Jimmy or Bryce I probably would’ve lost today. I just got lucky that unfortunately my opponent didn’t play quite as well today, but that’s just match play.” Barry said he managed only one birdie but was able to win a few holes with pars against the typically steady Hawkins, who said he hit only four greens in regulation. “I just didn’t hit the ball very well today and didn’t get off the tee very consistently,” said Hawkins. “I didn’t really give myself a lot of opportunities to hit the ball close and make some putts. It was just one of those kinda rough days.” Whatever the case, Barry said he’ll take the win and hopefully return today with a more consistent attack. “If you want to get anywhere in this tournament you’ve got to have a couple of those rounds where you’re not on your ‘A’ game but you still get through,” said Barry. “Thankfully I was kind of able to bring it back a little bit during the middle of the round to win a couple holes in a row and kind of get control of the match.” For the entire group, however, Murphy still looms large with every passing day. The Rogue River standout, who just wrapped up his freshman year for Oregon State, was smooth and steady on Saturday to deny Brooks. “I played well and I feel like my game’s improving every day,” said Murphy, who last year became the first in SOGC history to win three straight men’s regular titles. “I just hung in there today and played well pretty much the whole way through.” “I’m getting more comfortable every match play round,” he added, “and it’s just becoming another day of golf where I’m out here having fun and trying to stay focused.” MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP FLIGHT Kevin Murphy d.
