The Oregon Legislature passed a bill recently that banned the practice of teak surfing, which is also called platform dragging. Teak surfers hang off the rear platform of a boat and are pulled through the water fast enough for the boat's wake to allow the body to surf. The dangers of teak surfing come from the body being so close to the boat's propeller and from the inhalation of carbon monoxide gas from the engine exhaust. Under the new law, a person who operates a motorboat with someone holding onto or occupying the portion of a boat aft the transom will face a ticket with a bail of & 36;360, the maximum fine. Joe's store in Medford will host two elk-hunting seminars this month. Wil Askew, a former Medford resident, will give a seminar on back-country archery hunting for elk. His talk will cover gear, tactics, calling and taking care of your game in the field. Askew's program will run from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 12. Askew's program will be followed Aug. 16 by a seminar by Dieter Kaboth, a four-time world champion elk caller. His seminar runs from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Seating will be available for about 60 people for each seminar, and standing room is also available.
