I never dreamed that setting up my iPod Classic would be so much fun. I bought my iPod Classic during the summer, but I’m still nowhere near done downloading all of my CD collection onto iTunes — remember, I have more than 4,500 of them. I said it before and I’ll say it again: I will buy CDs until they don’t make them anymore. I’d much rather an actual copy of an artist’s work than download something I can’t touch. My iPod is great so far; I have more than 4,400 songs downloaded from my collection and into my “Ultimate Playlist.” I’m only placing the hits, a few rarities and great live performances on my playlist. Since I first shared my iPod experience with you, I’ve been approached by a number of people wanting to do the same. Like me, most of them said they still want to buy physical copies but can see the fun in having their own specific mix that they can access anytime. Although I prefer CDs, I agree it’s fun making an ultimate playlist. Along the way I’ve come to find unique and often cool topics within my downloading times. Mind you, this is a long process and something I am taking my time to do right. Plus, I get to touch all my CDs again and take the time to look through them again. In recent weeks, I’ve made it from George Michael to Kenny Rogers. I told you at the beginning of my endeavor my collection was huge and full of variety. In that span, I’ve been able to link several artists just by song. George Michael covered Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” on his “Songs Of The Last Century” album. He did a great job on her classic ballad. Prince also covered Raitt’s song on his 3-disc “Emancipation” set. Kenny Rogers also covered the track for his 1999 comeback album, “She Rides Wild Horses.” Michael, Raitt, Rogers and Prince are four different kinds of artists, but they all saw the beauty in a great song. Needless to say, all these versions are in my Playlist now. Remember Sinead O’Connor’s No. 1 hit “Nothing Compares 2 U” from her breakthrough album “I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got”? In case you’ve forgotten, it was Prince who wrote that impressive song. He also recorded it for himself, and it appears on his “The Hits Collection.” I included both on my playlist. I have all of Prince’s CDs. I think after taking much time to download all of his music into my iTunes account, the “Purple Rain” album is his finest piece of work. It has stood the test of time. And just like Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” did for other artists, so has Prince’s “Purple Rain.” Leann Rimes covered the track on her third album, “Sittin’ on Top of the World.” I had to include it on my iPod, too.
