Dennis was born on July 18, 1937 in Glendale, Calif. to Gerald S. and Florence E. (Kincaid) von Ting. His childhood was spent in many locations until settling in Medford, Ore. He attended Medford Senior High School, class of 1955, and then joined the Navy in that same year.
