The City Council will hold public hearings on regulating marijuana at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Council Chambers, 17 S. Buchanan Ave., Eagle Point. (Time has been corrected in this version) The Oregon Legislature decided in June to allow municipalities the option of banning pot sales and growing operations if 55 percent or more of their voters opposed Measure 91, the legalization law that passed statewide last November. In Eagle Point, 57 percent of the voters opposed the measure. City Administrator Henry Lawrence said the council will consider placing ballot measures in the November 2016 election asking voters whether to allow medical and recreational marijuana and related businesses and whether sales should be taxed at 3 percent. Lawrence said the city had received some inquiries for medical marijuana dispensaries but referred them to its business license ordinance, which prohibits businesses that break federal law. Marijuana is still considered an illegal drug at the federal level. Eagle Point Mayor Bob Russell said city officials patiently waited for state law to provide tools for cities to regulate cannabis-related businesses and that he felt strongly that citizens should decide. "Since there was an initial vote for legalizing marijuana at all, and (Eagle Point) citizens voted that they did not want legalization, they should decide on this as well," Russell said. "Whichever way the citizens want to go is where we're going to go. I have mixed feelings on the value of recreational marijuana, personally, but should the citizens decide that that's what they want to have happen, then that's what we will do."
