Mail Tribune 100, Nov. 24, 1915 The following news item was drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Nov. 24, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Nov. 24, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Nov. 24, 1915 ASHLAND CITY COUNCIL SETTLES LIGHT CONTROVERSY ASHLAND — Electric light and power matters have assumed a phase here to the extent that the city will try out the experiment of taking over the equipment of the Ashland Electric Power & Light Co., known as the Siskiyou Co., which is in reality the Oregon-California Power Co. The city purchases energy of the corporation at wholesale rates on terms which are considered advantageous. The contract as signed covers a period of three years and probably goes into effect Jan. 1, 1916. The city accomplishes this without issuing bonds, calling a special election or assuming interest charges, the contract enlisting for the specific buying and selling of juice on a wholesale basis. The action of the council in the matter was practically unanimous. Some see trouble ahead in synchronizing the currents of the dual systems, and other apprehensive ones fear that the merger will result in the installation of meters, an outcome which might not be out of place in view of flagrant violations of both heating and lighting privileges at the hands of certain patrons. "Give the plan a trial," represents sentiment heard on every hand. ASHLAND AND VICINITY Fred Penniston shot a Siberian goose recently while hunting near Bear Creek. This wild fowl is unusual among the feathered species in these parts. It has been sent to Medford undertaking parlors to be mounted, and will be kept among other specimens of the taxidermist's art at Harry Hosler's cigar store.
