Or a hamburger. When a craving for classic American dishes hits, Rooster’s in Medford is a good place to be. I had pie on the brain when my mom and I stopped in for lunch. The welcoming interior is reminiscent of a roadside diner. We were seated immediately, but service was slow after that. We didn’t see our waitress again for almost 10 minutes but watched as she visited other tables nearby. Nor did we get her name when she arrived at our table. We later learned she was the only waitress on staff during that time, hence the slower-than-normal service. Our meals, however, did not disappoint and satisfied all cravings for simple, unpretentious food. I ordered the Rooster’s Burger ($8.75) — a ¼-pound Angus patty with lettuce, tomato and onion sandwiched inside a sesame seed bun. You can add cheese for 50 cents, which I did. The burger delivered on all the flavors you would expect from a hamburger. The patty was juicy, seasoned well and cooked to a succulent medium rare. Entrees come with a selection of sides. I chose sweet potato fries ($1.25), because what is a burger without fries? Some of the best burgers falter when accompanied with substandard, overly salty fries. My sweet potato fries arrived hot and crunchy, but not oily or salty. When I can eat a handful of fries without rubbing a layer of oil off my fingers, those are quality fries. My mom had the Greek wrap ($8.75), which was filled with Mediterranean chicken, romaine lettuce, tomato, avocado, olives, mushrooms, Parmesan cheese, bell peppers and balsamic vinegar dressing. As a balsamic vinegar aficionado, my mom knows when something has been over or under dressed. Her wrap had enough balsamic dressing suitable for its size and didn’t overpower the other ingredients. Each ingredient was chopped to a similar size, and the filling did not spill out of the wrap. Even after a filling meal, I couldn’t ignore my desire for pie. After our waitress listed the restaurant's many choices, we agreed to share a slice of marionberry pie ($3.50). The pies at Rooster’s range from $3.50 to $4.25 per slice and can be ordered a la mode for an extra 95 cents. The pie was unevenly heated — cool on one side and warm on the other — but had an intense marionberry flavor that tasted fresh and tart. The filling was not overly sweet, which I always look for in a good pie. Rooster’s is a countryside restaurant in a city setting. It’s a place where spouses meet for a weekday lunch, friends see each other unexpectedly at another table and families gather for birthday celebrations. They serve breakfast, with omelettes for every palate. For lunch there is a wide selection of salads, sandwiches and burgers. The Quiche of the Day ($9.95) is a house specialty served with a dinner salad and roll. Rooster’s, at 350 E. Barnett Road, is open from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
