Hesia burns Hidden Valley MURPHY - Mazama boys basketball dynamo Levell Hesia provides extreme matchup problems for any opponent. Hidden Valley coach Randy Kirkland faced that dilemma Friday and didn't fare too well. Hesia, a 5-foot-7 junior point guard, burned the Mustangs for 27 points and Skyline Conference-leader Mazama won its ninth straight with a 66-46 victory over Hidden Valley. "They can spread the floor and Levell can break down whoever guards him," said Kirkland. "I thought we did a decent job on him, but he still got 27 points and probably had eight assists." Hidden Valley starter Chris Jiron fouled out guarding Hesia and backup Cody Biller picked up four fouls trying to defend the speedy guard. Hesia made the most of the opportunities from the line by making 10 of 12. "Every time he drove, the officials called something," said Kirkland, "and he capitalized on it." The Mustangs (7-14, 5-7 Skyline) led 10-9 at the end of the opening period, but got outscored 23-7 in the second quarter when Jared Giacomelli accounted for eight of his 10 points. "We fell apart in the second quarter," said Kirkland. "We broke down defensively. We weren't that concerned if Levell got his points. We wanted to limit everybody else." The seventh-ranked Vikings (18-2, 11-1 Skyline) kept their momentum going after halftime and opened up a 20-point lead entering the fourth quarter. Junior post Jeff Klug paced Hidden Valley with 18 points, including eight in the opening quarter. "We were able to get it inside," said Kirkland. "They were able to sandwich our big guys and forced us into some turnovers. It was frustrating to watch." ROGUE RIVER 53, PHOENIX 48 - At Rogue River, Luke Mortinson scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds as Rogue River held off Phoenix. The Chieftains used a 12-5 spurt in the third quarter to seize the lead for good. Phoenix climbed to within five points during the fourth quarter but couldn't narrow the deficit any further. Jason Luchterhand had eight points and nine rebounds for Rogue River, which improved to 16-5 overall and 9-3 in the Skyline Conference. Phoenix (6-16 overall, 2-10 Skyline) was led by sophomore Martin Gonzalez, who had 15 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Brady Rhodes added 11 points and Brett Ellis 10 in the losing effort. Pirates junior post Trace Barrett snagged 10 rebounds. The Cougars (16-5 overall, 10-2 Skyline) kept their conference-title dreams alive thanks to 53 combined points from their big three of senior forward Daniel Houston (24), senior post Beau Brown (18) and senior guard Justin Graven (11). Houston has totaled 50 points in his last two outings. Carl Fairburn paced the Honkers (2-10 Skyline) with 20 points, including four 3-pointers. The Knights (9-12 overall, 7-5 Skyline) had three players score in double figures, led by Sean Grohnholm's 18, and earned a 41-34 edge in rebounding. The Hornets (3-18, 2-10) got 14 points and nine rebounds from senior post Ty Munoz.
