LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Aug. 10 MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 10, 2015 @ 12:01 am Posted Aug. 10, 2015 @ 12:01 am » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2325,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> Not a Christian nation Responding to Mr DeVos’s letter of 28 July: This nation was not founded on the Christian religion, on its values or its morality. The Founding Fathers were men of the Enlightenment. They valued science and they valued reason. They did not value religion. It's easy to become confused by this. After all, they did talk about a creator, but they were Deists, and by “creator” Deists do not mean the same thing as a Theist (Christian) would. Like Einstein, Deists believe in a distant and unconcerned creator, the unknown that set the cosmos in order and then goes on to other things. This creator knows nothing about us, is not concerned with us and certainly didn’t die for us. Thomas Jefferson edited his own version of the New Testament, preserving what Jesus taught and tossing out all of the rest. To Deists, if one wants to peer into the mind of the creator one does not go to Scripture, instead one needs only to look at science. Please stop trying to confuse people by calling this a Christian nation. It is not. And a fairly superficial reading of the Founders will show you this. Ken Adamson Talent End modern slavery On July 27, 2015, Secretary of State John Kerry released the 2015 Trafficking in Persons Report, which ranks 188 countries on their efforts to combat human trafficking, including the United States. The TIP Report is the world’s “gold standard” for information on the global crime of modern day slavery. The report shows a desperate need for more international assistance to free children, women and men from enslavement and to prosecute and punish those who exploited and abused them. There is a bipartisan initiative in Congress that would provide increased U.S. foreign aid through a public-private partnership, the End Modern Slavery Initiative. The fund will receive funds from other government donors, as well. I strongly encourage the community to read the End Modern Slavery Initiative. Opinion is created by such industries as agrichemical and pharmaceutical and implemented by media and the public as it morphs into "facts." Scattered resistance by those who know the science is no match for PR astroturf millions. GMO foods are claimed to have no negative effects, contrary to quality research which is suppressed by industry and media. Grassroots opinion of vaccines is so confident of their safety and effectiveness that any contrary opinion can only come from kooks. The "Safe and Accurate Food Labeling act of 2015" is assumed to have truth in the title. Astroturfing reaches its greatest success when any doubter is called a danger to the public. Ira Edwards Medford Thanks for giving back It's so nice to see when young business owners like Jason and Danielle Hanlin truly understand giving back to the community. Their business, Guru Ink, just held their second fundraising golf tournament with proceeds to benefit Kids Unlimited. Many thanks to them and all of their hard-working employees for organizing a fun-filled weekend.
