In Hyatt and Howard Prairie lakes, boaters have been hitting their engine's lower units on humps and stumps where they're not used to seeing obstructions, according to the Jackson County marine patrol. At Howard Prairie, for instance, several boaters have hit obstructions on two shallow islands in recent weeks, says Sgt. Shawn Richards of the county's marine program. "For the past two or three years, people didn't have to worry about these two islands, but people are whacking the rocks there," Richards says. Also, there have been instances of boats striking the protruding footings at Willow Lake dam, and Lost Creek Lake remains littered with floating debris that won't thin itself out until the water drops and leaves logs high and dry on the banks, Richards says. Boaters need to remember that not all shallow spots or stumps have warning buoys on them, he says. Trout fishing opens in rivers The Rogue, Applegate and Illinois rivers open to trout fishing Sunday under a new suite of rules meant to simplify and homogenize angling regulations in Oregon. These rivers that used to fall under Oregon's "Second Opening Day" used to open on the fourth Saturday of May. The same set of rule changes that saw Hyatt and Howard Prairie remain open year-round beginning Jan. 1 also set the second opener to May 22. These rivers were closed to trout fishing to protect steelhead smolts from being caught and released as trout. The rule also applies to several other coastal streams statewide. Lemolo hiking bridge out of service Umpqua Forest engineers declared the Lemolo bridge along the North Umpqua Trail unsafe for foot, bicycle and horse traffic after a large tree recently fell on it. The bridge is located on the 13-mile Dread and Terror segment of the trail about three miles west from the White Mule Trailhead and 10 miles east of the Hot Springs Trailhead. Several hikers last weekend discovered the bridge and reported it to Forest Service officials, according to Jimmy Tyree, Diamond Lake District ranger. Engineers will check the structural damage before assessing how to repair the bridge. Until then, hikers who want to reach Lemolo Falls should plan to use the one-mile Lemolo Falls Trail No. 1468. 'Happy Ours' top boat name There may be no Liquid Assets or Kids' Inheritance there, but America's boat owners are still finding interesting ways to have their boat names mean something about their time on the water. BoatUS this week released its annual Top 10 boat names for the past year, and Happy Ours led the pack. BoatUS has kept a list over the past two decades of names customers have asked for when ordering decals to physically name their crafts. Common themes over the years are water puns, references to expendable cash and patriotic themes, according to BoatUS. The Top Ten names are: 1. Happy Ours 2. Freedom 3. Grace 4. Serendipity 5.
