COLLEGE ROUNDUP Beavers win opening baseball game Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Feb. 13, 2015 @ 8:58 pm Posted Feb. 13, 2015 @ 8:58 pm » Social News SURPRISE, Ariz. — Andrew Moore tossed seven innings of one-run baseball and Mitch Hickey picked up his first career win in his first outing as the Beavers downed Northwestern, 2-1, Friday afternoon at Surprise Stadium. Oregon State loaded the bases with one down in the bottom half of the ninth against Wildcats’ reliever Tommy Bordignon. While pitching to Trever Morrison, the right-hander hitched before going to the plate, allowing Joe Gillette to come in from third. Gillette was pinch running for Logan Ice, who led off the inning with a single. The win gives the Beavers their sixth consecutive opening day victory. Moore wasn’t credited with a decision but was stellar in seven innings. He scattered five hits and a run with nine strikeouts. His only run allowed came in the third when Scott Heelan doubled to left. The Beavers tied the score in the sixth when KJ Harrison opened the inning with a triple to the gap in right-center. His first career hit set the table for sophomore Billy King, who was pinch hitting. He doubled over the left fielder’s head on a pitch from Northwestern starter Brandon Magallones. Elliott Cary, also making his collegiate debut, went 2-for-4 to pace the Beavers, who finished the game with eight hits off five Northwestern pitchers. Hickey came on in relief of Moore in the eighth and was solid through two innings. The righty struck out two and allowed just one hit, in the ninth, while throwing 28 pitches. OSU plays Michigan State today. Track and Field SOU RELAY SHINES: Competing in its first indoor meet of the season, Southern Oregon University qualified its men’s distance medley relay team with an NAIA ‘A’ standard at the University of Washington’s Husky Invitational. The Raiders were runners-up to the Academy of Art (Calif.) in the 4,000-meter, six-team race, finishing a couple ticks back with a time of 9:58.42 — the fastest recorded mark in the NAIA this season by over 14 seconds and well clear of the ‘A’ qualifier cutoff of 10:12.72. Earning a trip to the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships were Zach Boyd-Helm on the first 1,200 meters, JJ Latu for the 400 portion, Kevin Jorgensen on the 800 and Jared Hixon for the final mile. In the women’s distance medley relay, SOU’s Karen Silvas, Amelia Maguin, Aspen Abbott and Jessie Rozario were 14th in 12:40.35. They missed the women’s NAIA ‘A’ standard by less than four seconds. Wrestling WYOMING 21, OSU 17: At Laramie, Wyo., Oregon State’s bid for an undefeated regular season ended when the 17th-ranked Beavers fell to No. 19 Wyoming. The Beavers (11-1, 6-0 Pac-12) led 14-3 after five bouts but Wyoming (9-4) won four of the last five and got two key pins to hand OSU its first loss since an 18-16 setback to Virginia Tech at last year’s National Duals on Feb. 16, 2014. OSU had won 14 straight over two seasons since then. Redshirt freshman Devin Reynolds (141) and senior Alex Elder (157) earned bonus points for the Beavers with major decisions. Redshirt freshmen Jack Hathaway (133) and Abraham Rodriguez (149) and senior Taylor Meeks (184) also earned decisions for OSU.
