Crater rolls in massive tournament SAN DIEGO � Crater High surged past Pacifica High of Garden Grove, 62-12, in the opening round of the Jack in the Box Invitational girls basketball tournament on the UC-San Diego campus Thursday. The tournament, sanctioned by the NCAA, has a field of 218 schools, divided into 14 pools. Crater justified its No. 1 seeding in its pool by roaring off to a 33-5 halftime advantage. Jody McLeod paved the way with 14 points, eight rebounds, and four steals. Sarah Pool added 13 points, four rebounds, seven assists and four steals. Amy Denson had 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals, while Janell Sapienza had seven points, eight rebounds and four steals. SOUTH PLAYERS HELP � At Long Beach, Calif., a pair of South Medford players contributed to the Oregon Ice�s first-round victory Thursday in the under-16 Slam and Jam boys basketball tournament at Cal State Long Beach. Oregon Ice, drawing players from seven schools, outgunned Calgary, Canada, 57-35, as pool play began in the 36-team event. Incoming junior Eric Fiegi tossed in nine points, connecting on 4-of-9 field goals, sank his only free throw, pulled down five rebounds, blocked two shots, dished out an assist and had a steal. Classmate Ryan Heil scored two points, snared four rebounds, blocked a shot and had an assist. Baseball ASHLAND 14-17, NORTH MEDFORD MAVERICKS 3-4 � At Miles Field, Ashland pounded the North Medford Mavericks twice in an Area 4 A American Legion baseball doubleheader. Mike Allen went 4-for-8 in the doubleheader, drove in six runs and scored three more. He hit a two-run home run in the first inning of the opener. Bill Rowe was 4-for-7 with three doubles and drove in seven runs, while Titus Weston scored seven runs. Rowe (3-0) and Jason Schroeder (2-2) were the winning pitchers. SOUTH MEDFORD COLTS 4, PHOENIX 3 � At Phoenix, in American Legion A play, Nick Erwen drove in two runs and scored once to lead the Colts. Clint Roderick went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI and Kyle Hadley 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. With the bases loaded in the sixth, Medford�s Ryan Parker struck out two batters to end the inning and preserve the win.
