Debra Forsyth, 61, loved animals, taking care of her two dogs and feeding several stray cats, said her son, Matt Mattz. " 'Animal warrior,' she would say," Mattz said. "She was always happy." Forsyth's body was found by firefighters after a fire at her home in the 400 block of East Vilas Road. Police and fire agencies were still trying to determine the cause of the blaze. "We're looking at all options, all possible causes at this point," Medford Fire-Rescue Fire Marshal Greg Kleinberg said Monday. Mattz said he has fond memories of Forsyth's support of his motocross racing endeavors and when she taught him to drive. A commercial fisherman, he said he always tried to call or visit her when he came ashore. "She was always really supportive," Mattz said. "I will always love her." Firefighters found Forsyth's body in her bedroom. The blaze caused severe damage throughout the house. Fire officials said they did not find any smoke alarms inside. "Basically it was not survivable in there," Kleinberg said. Kleinberg said a passerby called 911 at 10:20 p.m. after spotting a glow. The witness tried knocking on doors but no one answered. Four engines responded to the fire, along with an engine from Jackson County Fire District 3, which was the first agency to arrive. "(Responding crews) did say that there was fire blowing out the back door," Kleinberg said. Firefighters had the blaze out within 30 minutes of arriving. Though the house has a Central Point address, Medford Fire-Rescue officials said the property falls under Medford's jurisdiction. — Reach reporter Ryan Pfeil at 541-776-4468 or [email protected].
