Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Mar. 7, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Mar. 7, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News March 7, 1915 The basket ball championship of Southern Oregon was practically won last night by Ashland, when they out counted the locals 23-17. The Ashland girls defeated the Medford girls 3-1, in their third clash of the season. A thousand people attended the games. Ashland excelled in team work and showed excellent judgment in basket shooting. They played a ragged game, and the result of the contest was never in doubt. Medford at times dished up bursts of speed, but more often played in the slumping class. At the end of the first period the score stood, Ashland 12 and Medford 8. Ashland was always on the long end of the score, but never fare enough to be at ease. Thomas of the locals took an important part in the proceedings, and played the steadiest game of the evening. Grisez of Ashland played the most spectacular game. The teams play on the Ashland floor tonight in the final game of the series. The Ashland five are the most probable winners of the state championship.   The "Today" company , who will appear at the Page Wednesday, March 10, will be the most expensive and extravagant attraction since "Omar the Tentmaker." The immense amount of scenery which this company uses requires an army of 22 men on the stage to make the shifts between acts. All gowns and costumes are of the latest and most expensive material. The "Today" company is an absolute all-star cast. Arthur Byron last year was leading man with Mrs. Fiske. He also played the lead with Maude Adams in "What Every Woman Knows" and he interpreted the role of the Dog in "Chanticler" with Adams. This was the part that the famous French actor, Coquelin, played. Byron likewise created the role of John Burkett Ryder, the power-loving millionaire in "The Lion and the Mouse." Bertha Mann, the leading woman, is regarded as the most promising of all the younger artists. She has been with Adams, Arnold Daly, as his leading woman, and with Nance O'Neill.
