BOYS PREP BASKETBALL Cascade's state hopes ruined CHILOQUIN -- The Cascade Christian High boys basketball team experienced the ultimate in frustration on Thursday night. The Challengers saw a Class 2A state tournament berth slip from their grasp as they squandered a five-point lead in the final 43 seconds of play and lost to Chiloquin 56-55. Chiloquin's Bobby Holster picked up a loose ball under the Panthers' basket and made a layup for the winning basket as time expired. "This is the most devastating loss in my 11-year coaching career," Cascade Christian coach Brian Morse said. "We were ahead virtually the whole game by six or eight points, and it got away from us at the end." Morse was hit with his first-ever technical foul with 43 seconds to play and Cascade Christian clinging to a 53-50 lead. With the Challengers in a four-corners offense, Andy Baker was apparently fouled from behind by Chiloquin's Jared Hall near midcourt, but the official called Baker for over-and-back. "Baker was a good six to eight inches from the halfcourt line and he gets hammered," Morse said. "All I said was `What? Over-and-back? Our guy got fouled!' And he (the official) nailed me. I hadn't said a thing to him the whole night." Hall made both free throws from the technical, then drilled a leaning, 15-foot jumper with 22 seconds left that gave Chiloquin its first lead since the first quarter, 54-53. Morse then called a timeout and set up a play that worked to perfection. Don Jenkins scored on a layup from the weak side, regaining Cascade Christian the lead at 55-54 with 13 seconds remaining. Chiloquin hustled to the other end of the court and Hall tried to win the game with a jumper from the free-throw line. The shot missed and Cascade Christian's Jenkins and Tim Milovich each had a good opportunity to get the rebound. But another player knocked the ball into the air and it went to a leaping Holster, who timed his jump perfectly and laid the ball in the basket an instant before the final buzzer sounded. Cascade Christian finished its season with a 17-10 record. Chiloquin earned a berth in the Class 2A state tournament with the victory and plays Southern Cascade League champion Lost River in a seeing game Saturday at Merrill at 3:45 p.m. CASCADE CHRISTIAN (55) -- Joe Moxley 19, Kimmelshue 4, Jenkins 12, Baker 14, Ferrell 0, Cook 0, Milojevich 6, Alvarez 0.
