Medford man accused of assaulting toddler Wednesday Oct 12, 2016 at 4:37 PM Oct 12, 2016 at 4:37 PM Vickie Aldous Mail Tribune @VickieAldous A Medford man with a history of convictions for violence and theft is facing new charges after a toddler he babysat was found to have suffered broken bones. Jordan Dale Silva, 23, entered not guilty pleas Wednesday to charges of third-degree assault and first-degree criminal mistreatment. He has a pre-trial conference hearing scheduled for Nov. 14 in Jackson County Circuit Court. He has been released on his own recognizance from the Jackson County Jail with conditions that he possess no weapons and have no contact with the toddler. According to an affidavit, Silva had been babysitting the toddler at an apartment on North Ivy Street in Medford while the boy's mother worked. The mother was his girlfriend. On Sept. 9, the mother went to work, leaving Silva with the toddler, who was 11 months old at the time. Silva later called her to report the toddler had blood in his diaper, was not crawling correctly and would hold one leg up like a flamingo when he stood up on his feet, the affidavit said. Upon returning to the apartment, the mother found the boy had a small cut to his penis. She attempted to make a doctor's appointment, but was unable to schedule one before going work. She left the toddler in Silva's care again while she went back to work. Her regular child care provider would not take the boy because of the cut, the affidavit said. After the mother returned from work, she noticed bruising that night on the toddler's face that had not been there before, the affidavit said. The next day the mother noticed the toddler was not using his right leg correctly. She decided to seek medical treatment for his leg and the bruising at a walk-in clinic. X-rays showed he had a broken right tibia. The mother was instructed to seek additional care at a hospital, the affidavit said. She took him to Providence Medford Medical Center, where he was treated and law enforcement was called, the affidavit said. An investigation determined the toddler suffered the facial bruising and broken tibia while in Silva's care. More bruising on his arms, back, chest and leg were documented, as well as a healed fracture of his shoulder blade that was estimated to have occurred two months before, the affidavit said. The toddler also had unexplained bruising about six or seven times while in Silva's care, the affidavit said. Silva was interviewed by police and denied knowing how the broken leg or facial bruising happened, the affidavit said. Silva had a string of convictions in 2014. He was convicted of second-degree disorderly conduct after witnesses said he punched a man in the head, according to court documents. Silva was convicted of interference with making a report and two counts of harassment after pushing, shoving and scratching his mother, knocking a phone out of her hand while she was talking to a 911 dispatcher and kicking and breaking Christmas ornaments, according to court documents. After stealing a relative's iPod and selling it to a pawn shop, he was convicted of first-degree theft. He was convicted of second-degree theft after selling his landlord's dishwasher and stove out of a rental unit to a used-appliances business, according to court records. In 2015, Silva was the victim of a stabbing and was injured in the leg after a man and woman suspected of pawning stolen goods attacked him.
