Smith made out with his write-in campaign, but I didn't see anything in the paper about it. — No name given, via phone Official election results aren't typically released for several weeks after polls close, unnamed caller. On election night, we here at the Muddy Tributary work from preliminary reports released by the Jackson County Elections Office. Results for write-ins, however, are only tabulated when there are more write-in votes than votes for the named candidates. In those cases, elections staff hand count the votes to determine the winner. As a Republican, C.W. Smith sought to run against Dennis Linthicum, the only named candidate for Senate District 28 on the primary ballot. Smith had another Republican challenger in Todd Kepple of Klamath Falls, who launched his own write-in campaign for the seat. It won't be known who got the most of the 449 Republican write-in votes because Linthicum got 1,947, winning with an estimated 81.26 percent of the vote. There were write-ins on the Democrat and Independent ballots, though. It could be the better part of a month before we learn how many write-ins Democrats and Independents gave Smith, but according to the most-updated unofficial report, there were 186 total write-in votes for the state Senate seat in Democrats' ballots, and 82 write-in votes in Independents' ballots. Neither Democrats nor Independents had a named candidate for the position on their ballot. — Send questions to “Since You Asked,” Mail Tribune Newsroom, P.O.
