Workshop will provide help in waste reduction By SHARI DOWNHILL The event is sponsored by the Ashland Chamber of Commerce, Southern Oregon University Small Business Development Center, the Oregon Economic and Community Development Department, and the Mark O. Hatfield School of Government at Portland State University. "For the past two years we have been investigating firms in the manufacturing, construction, service, and agricultural sectors of the Northwest that have adopted resource efficiency and sustainability practices," said workshop presenter Bob Doppelt, director for Watershed and Community Health, an institute in the Mark O. Hatfield School of Government. "We found that a growing number of these firms are saving considerable sums while reducing their waste and environmental impacts. "In the workshop, we will share this information and discuss how local firms can apply similar practices." In addition to Doppelt, other presenters include Larry Chalfan, former chief executive officer of Oki Semiconductor, who will discuss sustainability in manufacturing. Diane Garcia, director of Portland State University's Waste to Work Partnership and former recycling coordinator for the State of Oregon and Ashland Sanitary and Recycling Service, will describe ways to convert waste into new products, revenue and jobs. Business leaders from Bear Creek Corp., Rogue Pacific Lumber, Schrodt Designs, Southern Oregon Goodwill Industries, and Golden Fields Design and Construction will share their experience in implementing sustainable practices.
