OUR VIEW Fighting back against domestic violence MailTribune.com Writer Posted Sep. 10, 2014 @ 2:00 am Posted Sep. 10, 2014 @ 2:00 am » Social News The video that derailed Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice's career may do some good if it raises public awareness of the scourge of domestic violence and real understanding of how that violence happens and why it is so difficult to stop. Much of the public reaction to that video shows just how far society has to go. The security video from an Atlantic City casino elevator last February shows Rice punching his then-fiancee, Janay Palmer, who falls unconscious after her head strikes a handrail. The video, posted Monday on the Internet, prompted the Baltimore Ravens to cancel Rice's contract and the NFL to suspend him from the league indefinitely. Initially, Rice had been given a two-day suspension for his actions. NFL officials say they had not seen the elevator video until Monday, but they did know that Palmer had been rendered unconscious. Much of the public reaction to the video and to the punishment belatedly handed out reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of what domestic violence is, who it affects and why. Not surprisingly, many rushed to blame the victim, if not for somehow "deserving" the beating she received, — although some did say that — then for failing to "just leave" the relationship. Janay Palmer married Rice since the February incident. A few facts: Domestic violence is not rare. One in three women are abused in this country; 30 years ago, it was 1 in 4. Every minute, 20 Americans suffer violence, stalking or sexual violence at the hands of an intimate partner. Domestic violence knows no class or income level. It happens across all social and economic groups. Although men can be victims, 85 percent of victims are women, and the severity of their injuries is generally greater. Leaving will not stop abuse. Abusers enraged by the loss of control may escalate the violence and even kill their victims. According to the Oregon Coalition Against Domestic & Sexual Violence, danger to the victim increases 70 percent if she tries to leave. Victims stay with their abusers for a variety of reasons: to protect children, because abusers often threaten to harm children if the victim leaves; to protect themselves, because they rightly fear greater violence if they try to escape; because they still love the abuser and believe he can change. What can concerned people do about this problem? Support shelter programs, such as Dunn House locally, where abuse victims and their children can be safe while their abusers are prosecuted. Support efforts to raise awareness of domestic violence. Learn about the reality of domestic violence, not the myths. And above all, stop blaming the victims.
