Officials estimate the first phase, called "Oregon 62: I-5 to Dutton Road" project, will take about two years to complete. It will build about half of the 4½-mile, four-lane expressway, which will run from Poplar Drive in Medford north to Corey Road along the Old Medco Haul Road. ODOT spokesman Gary Leaming said the Old Medco Haul Road is now closed to pedestrians because of the construction. The route will parallel Highway 62, which is to the east. The project's second phase, which is scheduled to go to bid later this year, will extend the road from Vilas to Corey roads. Knife River Materials will head up the project's first phase. All lanes of Highway 62 will be open in both directions during construction, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Motorists should start to see work on a temporary pedestrian walkway in the area by Wednesday, May 18. ODOT officials said in a news release that the expressway will "reduce congestion and improve safety within and throughout the region." Highway 62 at Delta Waters Road is the busiest intersection in southwestern Oregon, the release said, with traffic counts on Highway 62 higher than those on Interstate 5 north of Medford.
