The restaurant with upscale brew-pub fare opened a few months ago but just celebrated its official grand opening this month. By 6 p.m. on weekend nights, Climate City Brewing Company is bustling. The decor probably has as much to do with the restaurant's popularity as the food. A bank of large new windows has been installed to brighten the interior of the brick building, which previously housed The Brewery restaurant. The dark, closed-in feel of the building was off-putting to people who had never visited The Brewery, but the new windows now show off beer brewing vats inside. The ceilings are tall, with exposed duct work, while wood beams, brick walls and vintage-style beer posters warm up the space, creating an industrial modern-meets-historic vibe. Visitors to the restaurant at 509 S.W. G St. enter either through the front G Street doors, or walk over a covered bridge for pedestrians to a side entrance. An outdoor patio area with rustic tables, chairs and picnic tables is shaded with trees and sits beside a creek. Strings of lights overhead create a warm glow for summer evenings. Two eating areas indoors accommodate the crowds — most of the time. The restaurant doesn't take reservations, so be prepared to take a stroll and look at Grants Pass' iconic public art bear sculptures downtown when waits are long. Small plates range from $8 to $12, with selections including Parmesan-herb breadsticks; nachos with beef tenderloin, peppered bacon, blue cheese and jack cheese and onions; spinach, artichoke, caramelized onion, peppers, cream cheese and smoked cheddar dip with Indian-style naan bread; and the French fry sampler with sea salt and pepper fries, Cajun tater tots and blue cheese-with-bacon fries. My family tried the Caesar salad, which is $6 plus $3 extra for grilled chicken and $5 extra for smoked salmon. The fresh, crisp Romaine lettuce was drizzled with dressing and sprinkled with Parmesan cheese, flavorful sundried tomatoes and slightly sweet chicken. We also had a traditional pepperoni pizza, which had chunky tomato sauce, spicy pepperoni and a delicious Parmesan crust. Like many brew pubs these days, Climate City Brewing Co. follows the trend of blackening the bottom of the pizza crust, so be forewarned if your kids don't like this development. The 16-inch pizza was $24. The restaurant does have a kids menu to please picky eaters, with choices ranging from $5 to $7 for chicken tenders with fries, macaroni in a four-cheese sauce topped with bread crumbs, two burger sliders with fries, pizza and a grilled cheese sandwich on sourdough bread with fries. My son ordered the $7 sliders, which came with thick, filling burger patties and melted American cheese, plus a mountain of flavorful fries. The regular burgers on the menu have belly-busting half-pound beef burgers for $12 to $13. For a change to the traditional burger, try the lamb and wild boar burger with sundried cherries and blue cheese for $15, or the buffalo burger with toppings such as roasted peppers, fried green tomatoes and pepper jack cheese for $14. Beer selections range from smooth blond beers to the Rainie Falls Red with malty notes and hop flavors to the dark, creamy Hyperion Porter. Prices are not posted at the restaurant, but my pint of porter was $4.75. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.
