(Mail Tribune / Bob Pennell) Snowfall not enough to open ski area Southern Oregon's first big snowfall had skiers and snowboarders thinking about winter fun on Monday. Jacob Gooding of Medford tried to drive to Mount Ashland for some snowboarding, but he had to turn around when the going got tough on the unplowed road between Interstate 5 and the ski area. Snow fell on Mount Ashland during the day, but the ski area was still a long way from opening. Ski area managers usually wait until they have three feet of snow on the ground to open, and there was less than a foot on Monday. Dec. 10 is the average opening day for Southern Oregon's publicly owned ski and snowboard area over its 40-plus seasons. Forecasters were expecting the next storm to blow through the region Wednesday night, Thursday and Thursday night with a mixture of rain and snow. At least two Oregon ski areas plan to open this week. Timberline on Mount Hood had 29 inches of snow on the ground and announced plans to open Thursday. Mount Bachelor had 22 inches and was making arrangements to open on Saturday. Would you like to respond to this story? If so Click Here to visit our forums.
