Mail Tribune / Jim Craven Search for robber continues By CHRIS CONRAD Mail Tribune A man who robbed Washington Mutual’s Medford branch at Crater Lake Avenue and Stevens Street remained on the loose Friday night. The robber entered the bank at 2:27 p.m. and handed a teller a note demanding money. The note also stated the man was armed, but no weapon was seen during the robbery, Medford police Lt. Tim George said. The suspect remained calm throughout. Patrons were unaware a robbery was occurring just a few feet from them, witnesses said. Three Medford teenagers who were waiting in line behind the suspect did not notice anything strange about the man or his actions. "If they hadn’t have told us, we wouldn’t have known anything had happened," said Katie Scott, 17. Advertisement The teller handed the suspect an undisclosed amount of money and he left the bank through an exit facing Crater Lake Avenue, police said. "He walked out casual, like he was doing regular banking," said Brittany Hicks, 16. Police arrived shortly afterward, blocking off the parking lot to preserve the crime scene. Tico, a police search dog, attempted to track the suspect’s path of escape. "When a guy’s doing a robbery like this, he’s sweating a lot, which gives the dog something to scent on," George said. Police do not yet know which direction the man fled after leaving the bank. No vehicle was seen. "At this point, we don’t know where he’s headed," George said. The suspect is described as a white male, with a light complexion and thin build. He is believed to be about 6 feet 3 inches tall with dark hair and a trimmed goatee. He was wearing a dark blue long-sleeved shirt, tan cargo shorts, a blue baseball cap with white or red lettering on it and silver-frame sunglasses with mirrored lenses, police said. George said this incident does not appear to be related to a string of 10 robberies that have occurred in the Rogue Valley since February. This is Medford’s second bank robbery of the summer. On June 20, two masked men armed with handguns robbed the downtown Bank of America. Police believe these men are also responsible for a July 14 robbery of a PremierWest Bank in Dorris, Calif. The case is currently under investigation by Medford detectives and the FBI. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 770-4784.
