LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Dec. 7 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Dec. 7, 2014 at 12:01 AM Posted Dec. 7, 2014 at 12:01 AM » Social News Oppose LNG boondoggles The proposed Jordan Cove liquefied natural gas export facility in Coos Bay and the Pacific Connector pipeline are boondoggles of the first order. They will damage Southern Oregon, the United States and the world — all for the private profit of out-of-state private companies. These projects use eminent domain to "take" private land, not for legitimate public purpose, but to line the pockets of private companies. This is a gross misuse of eminent domain, a violation of the rights of Southern Oregon landowners and another example of crony capitalism. One argument that corporate PR flacks make for these proposals is that they would create well-paying jobs for Southern Oregon. What they do not say is that they would be temporary jobs that last for the construction phases only, leaving a handful of permanent jobs. Look at the oil boom in North Dakota to see the destructive effects of such temporary boomtown jobs on local communities: inflation, increased crime and chemical dependency, destruction of local long-term jobs. We bear the costs, the out-of-state companies reap the profits. Please join me and many others in contacting Gov. Kitzhaber and local and federal legislators to oppose these destructive projects. Robert John Scheelen, Medford A Gray Thursday suggestion To address the non-critical stores that chose to be open on the Thanksgiving holiday looking for that dollar that supersedes family and thanks for our blessing, we suggest that the stores pay the employees a minimum of two times wages and only use non-coerced volunteer employees for that day, or we won't shop there. What do you think? Phil and Carol Koszyk, Medford Morality and climate change Is it moral to kill future generations to secure our lifestyle for a few more years? That is the big question behind greenhouse gas induced global warming that is more apparent with each year. Our only remaining hope is to stop the powerful fossil-fuel Industry now, even if it means mass economic chaos. We cannot continue to vote for immoral legislators who are acolytes to that fossil-fuel Industry. These are the legislators who vote to disempower the EPA and subsidize the industry in exchange for hefty campaign contributions. Sadly, Greg Walden fits this immoral profile. We know that greenhouse gases from fossil fuels are driving the climate change that we were warned of years ago, and which is now becoming more visible. Time is not on our side any longer. A few scientists estimate as little as 15 years given the alarming data that now includes feedback loops. The continued promotion of fossil fuels can only be viewed as immoral acts given that the certain outcome is mass murder and death. Greed driven humans are doing this. Uncaring and ignorant humans are allowing it to happen. It is true; evil prevails when good men do nothing. Would the thieves like someone to do that to them or their parents? Why don't they bring them back to me on North Ross Lane? Louise King, Medford Defend voters' will A lawsuit crafted to overturn the GMO crop ban ordinance passed by a large majority of Jackson County voters last May, not only ignores the wishes of Jackson County citizens, but directly benefits the makers of GMO seeds and pesticides such as Monsanto and Syngenta. And while two local GMO Roundup Ready alfalfa farmers are the named plaintiffs in that suit, it is the “agriculture and biotechnology organizations assisting the farmers,” (as reported in the Mail Tribune) who would gain the most by overturning our local law. Those multinational corporations do not care about the threat of pollen contamination from GMO crops to our local family farms. Those wealthy and powerful corporations spent almost $1 million in negative campaign ads to stop measure 15-119. Please write or call Jackson County commissioners to tell them that we expect our elected officials to defend the will of the voters and to not agree to any legal injunction stopping measure 15-119 from going into effect.
