North Medford's Schultz wins twice at state tennis BEAVERTON -- North Medford junior Leslie Schultz got off to a good start during the opening day of the girls Class 4A state tennis tournament at Tualatin Hills Recreation Center Thursday. The unseeded Schultz only lost one game in posting a pair of victories. Schultz defeated Autumn Gregory of McMinnville, 6-1, 6-0, in a pigtail match to get into the tournament bracket. Then Schultz blanked Becky Prewitt of Crescent Valley, 6-0, 6-0, to move into today's round of 16 against seventh-seeded Kelli Royer from Churchill of Eugene. "She (Schultz) was just on today," North Medford coach Dale Jensen said. "Her speed is her big strength, and she was moving well. She was incredibly focused. It's the best I've seen her play." Schultz was just part of the good news for the Black Tornado, which is a contender to bring home a trophy. North's best hope to go deep into the tournament, sophomore Jenny Brown, cruised in her lone match of the day. The third-seeded Brown had little difficulty in posting a straight set love victory over Katie Schaefer of Hermiston. Brown faces unseeded Emily Kirchem of Reynolds at 10:30 a.m. today. Brown has beaten Kirchem twice, but both matches were competitive. North freshman Annie Chaney got bounced into the consolation bracket with a 6-0, 6-1 loss to top-seeded Tara Livesay of Lakeridge, last year's state runner-up. "Annie played extremely well," said Jensen. "A lot of games went to deuce. It was overwhelming for her because the other girl was more experienced and more consistent." Chaney can still help the Black Tornado by picking up team points in the consolations. The North doubles team of Andrea Pratt and Kelsey Chamberlain won a pigtail match and advanced into the main bracket. Pratt and Chamberlain defeated the South Eugene team of Lauren Meyer and Ann Koveisha, 6-3, 6-2. The North doubles team faces sixth-seeded Grayce Nelson and Kaitlin Kelty of Jesuit today. Boys Tennis CLASS 4A STATE TOURNAMENT -- At Gresham, second-seeded Jon Endrikat of North Medford advanced to the round of 16 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Charn Bak of Beaverton at Mount Hood Community College. Endrikat faces Andrew Laing from Mountain View of Bend in his first match today. The unseeded Black Tornado doubles team of Brock Jonasson and Jeremy Leever will see their initial action of the tournament today against the unseeded team of Sean Barrington and Dave Kershner of Tigard. Eli and Zach Matthews of South Medford advanced to the second round of doubles by defeating Tualatin's Brian Imus and Dave Tercek, 6-1, 6-1. Ashland's Aaron Harris won his opening-round match, while the Grants Pass doubles team of Paul Dickerson and Tom Cohen had a bye.
