South drops Enterprise RED BLUFF, Calif. � South Medford stormed back from a halftime deficit and defeated Enterprise, Calif., 64-53 in the first round of the Red Bluff Daily News Holiday Classic boys basketball tournament. Enterprise erupted for 23 second-quarter points and took a six-point halftime lead, 35-29. But the Panthers� defense tightened in the second half and they got a couple of big 3-point baskets in the fourth quarter in overtaking Enterprise, which won the Section 3 championship in Northern California last year. South limited Enterprise to nine points in each of the third and fourth quarters. "Not only did we not defend them very well in that stretch," South coach Dennis Murphy said of the second quarter, "but we struggled to score. We came out better in the second half and not only played harder, but smarter." The Panthers pulled into a 44-44 tie by the end of the third quarter, then early in the fourth, Ryan Heil and John McKay hit back-to-back 3-pointers as South pulled away. McKay scored 18 points, Heil 17 and Boomer Marshall 13. "One of the good things that happened was John McKay stepped up and shot the ball more and scored better," said Murphy. "We needed that to happen." The Panthers are playing without 6-foot-8 post Eric Fiegi, who injured an ankle in practice this week. "It was a good sign that the kids came back in the second half," said Murphy. "That showed some character. Plus, it�s the first time we�ve ever played without Eric. That shed some light on things. We asked everybody to step up, and they did." South next plays host Red Bluff tonight at 8:30. Red Bluff defeated El Camino, Calif., 62-59 in overtime. HAYWARD, CALIF. 56, ASHLAND 46 � At Anderson, Calif., Hayward improved to 7-0 with the victory in the first round of the Anderson Tournament. Ashland (2-2) slowed the tempo on fast-paced Hayward and trailed by only two points late in the fourth quarter. But they were only 9-for-15 on foul shots, and nearly all the misses came in the fourth. "We just went stone cold," said Ashland coach John Skinner. "What hurt us is we missed five of those free throws in the fourth quarter and three of them were one-and-ones. "We got them in foul trouble, but we just couldn�t hit the free throws." Hayward put the Grizzlies in a bind thanks to a 19-6 third quarter in which Ashland struggled to find its offense. Twins Jamon and Jerome Tatum paced Hayward with 16 and 13 points, respectively. Ashland posted a balanced attack, with Ryan Beugli scoring 11 points and Carter Kirkpatrick adding nine points and seven rebounds. Noah Shields had eight points and seven rebounds before fouling out with three minutes to go. Despite the loss, Skinner said his team came out of the contest with some positives. "It was really a good team for us to play for the simple fact that we knew they were going to be a tough team," he said. "They�re a run-and-gun team, and we were able to slow them down with our defense." Ashland will play the loser of the first-round matchup between host Anderson and West Valley at 5 p.m. today. Girls: NORTH VALLEY 41, BROOKINGS 35 � At Merlin, junior forward Shannon Silva converted a 3-point play midway through the fourth period to put North Valley in the lead, and the Knights maintained it the rest of the way for the non-league victory. Junior post Whitney Coston led the Knights (2-2) with 13 points and seven rebounds, and Silva chipped in 10 points. North Valley led 8-0 after four minutes and 16-8 after one period, but Brookings fought back in the second period and eventually surged in front before Silva�s late-game heroics.
