Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend December 1, 2005 Mount Ashland hopes for weekend skiing by Dec. 9 Stormy weather through the weekend may drop enough snow for the Mount Ashland ski area to open, but you’ll have to wait another week to ride the chairlifts. Mount Ashland managers have decided to operate only on weekends until the winter holidays begin. Seven-day-a-week skiing and snowboarding could begin as soon as Dec. 16, but if there is adequate snow before that date, the ski area will be open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Rick Saul, the ski area’s marketing director, said there aren’t enough weekday visitors in early December to justify the cost of operating. Saul said Mount Ashland employees need 48-hour notice to report for work, and the ski area needs several days to groom slopes, order food and prepare for visitors. Those preparation days eliminate any chance of opening this weekend, so the next possible opening date would be Dec. 9. As of Wednesday morning, there were 19 inches of snow at the lodge. Mountain managers need about three feet of snow to open, but forecasters said the storm that was expected to arrive Wednesday evening could bring as much as two feet of snow by the time it blows through. More storms were expected during the weekend and into early next week. "It’s looking pretty good" for a Dec. 9 opening, Saul said.
