Eagles lose shooting touch Missed shots and miscues prove to be Eagle Point’s undoing as Bend pins first loss on Eagles By KRIS HENRY Mail Tribune EAGLE POINT — Even with a 5-0 start, Eagle Point’s boys basketball team knew it was going to lose at some point. Going 2-22 the previous season gives plenty of perspective on that fact of life. So it wasn’t that the Eagles lost to Bend, 59-45, Friday night that truly was disturbing, it’s the manner in which it came to pass at Eagle Point High. Eagle Point (5-1) connected on only 17-of-52 field-goal attempts (32.7 percent) and turned the ball over 20 times in a sloppy non-conference game against the Lava Bears (3-2), who didn’t fare much better. Bend was 18-of-42 from the field (42.9 percent) and had 23 turnovers of its own. "I guess I could say we were due for one of these," said second-year Eagle Point coach Rob Boye, "but no coach wants to admit they’re due for a loss. We had our chances early, we just couldn’t take advantage of them." The Eagles appeared destined for good things with an 8-3 lead and some fairly clean play on offense and defense. But Bend’s pressure, and the Eagles’ propensity to shoot themselves in the foot, kept Eagle Point from coming out on top in a very winnable game. "We just wanted to jam the key a little bit on them," Bend coach Don Hayes said of his game plan. "We knew their inside play was what they like to go to, so we wanted to make them beat us on perimeter shots, and I don’t think they hit many of those. They hit a few, but not enough to hurt us." Bend’s Garret Winter came off the bench to score a game-high 17 points, while Eagle Point’s Casey Hedrick paced his team off the bench with 12 points. The loss proved especially bitter for seniors like Tim Martinen and Cole Brown, who have trudged through numerous losses in order to get to where the Eagles were entering Friday’s game. Typically the team’s leading scorers, Martinen and Brown combined for only 16 points, with all nine of Brown’s points coming in the second half. "We wanted to come out strong this year," said Martinen. "Eagle Point’s been in the gutter since I’ve been here, so we were pretty excited about the 5-0 start. Being 6-0 would have been nice, but we just pretty much beat ourselves tonight." Bend managed a double-digit lead for much of the second half, which is slightly deceiving considering the score was only 38-28 with 5:50 to play. The Eagles had a chance to make it a six-point game moments later after a basket and a Bend turnover, but the story of the night reared its ugly head once again as Eagle Point’s inbounds pass was thrown away. "That’s shades of last year," said Boye. "I really did think we cured that turnover problem. Obviously, that’s something we’re going to have to work on." A two-minute span where almost no defense was played helped boost the final score as the teams exchanged five layups and a 3-pointer. An 11-of-14 effort from the free-throw line in the final three minutes enabled Bend to pull away as, all told, 48 of the game’s 104 points were scored in the final eight minutes. "We were never totally out of it, even with a couple minutes to go," said Boye. "Again, though, guys have to step up and make plays, and we’re looking at a horrible shooting night from just about everyone here. "Those are just despicable numbers (17-for-52 and 8-for-17 from the free-throw line). We just can’t have that. We’re not a team that can shoot like that and still win."
