COLLEGE ROUNDUP Raiders run wild in sweep of BC Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Mar. 27, 2016 at 2:00 AM Posted Mar. 27, 2016 at 2:00 AM » Social News ASHLAND — British Columbia's team ERA ranked near the bottom of the Cascade Conference coming into Saturday's games, and 16th-ranked Southern Oregon didn't make it any prettier in 9-4 and 7-3 wins at University Field. The Raiders (21-9 overall, 7-3 CCC) totaled 24 hits and stole 13 bases without being caught — establishing a team record for steals in a doubleheader with nearly three times the total of SOU's entire 2014 season (five) — as they completed a weekend sweep to set up Tuesday's key home matchups with first-place Oregon Tech. Alexa Gonzalez, Abigail Lund, Aaliyah Oliver and Kayleen Smith had two hits apiece in the first game; Amelia Hensler, Taylor Martinez, Kelsey Randall and Oliver had two apiece in the second and Megan Winton stroked two-run singles in both games. Sydney White earned the Game 1 decision, registering her fourth complete-game victory in eight days by holding the Thunderbirds to two earned runs, and Victoria Mackey pitched 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to win Game 2 and up her record to 10-1. UBC, in its first year as an associate member of the CCC, dropped to 6-13 overall and 4-6 in the CCC. After being shut out twice Friday at Oregon Tech, the Thunderbirds took a 4-2 lead in the second inning of the opener when, with two outs, Lindsay Ogilvie followed an SOU error with a two-run single. Gonzalez cut the lead in half with an RBI single in the bottom of the second. In the fourth, Smith's infield single — which brought her SOU-record hitting streak to 18 games — plated Oliver to tie it and, after a Martinez walk, Winton's two-out liner to center scored two and made it 6-4. Smith, who went 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBIs, added a two-run double in the fifth and Martinez followed with an RBI single. Oliver stole three bases in the game and had five on the day. White (6-4) labored through a 133-pitch start, working around seven hits and six walks with two strikeouts. In the second inning of Game 2, with the scored tied at 1, the Raiders strung together four consecutive extra-base hits with two outs: Hensler doubled, Martinez doubled, Oliver tripled and Randall doubled to make it 4-1. Smith's hitting streak was halted in Game 2, but she took her first and second walks of the season in her 88th and 89th plate appearances. Baseball CAL 5, OSU 3: At Berkeley, Calif., KJ Harrison hit his third home run of the season and Luke Heimlich allowed just one run in 4 2/3 innings of relief in No. 3 Oregon State’s loss to No. 17 California. Harrison drilled his second home run of the weekend over the fence in left to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead. Both home runs came in the first as he hit a solo shot Thursday night off Cal starter Daulton Jefferies. Saturday’s round-tripper was the 13th of Harrison’s career. For the third time in Pac-12 play, the Beavers chased the opposing starter before the end of the first. On Saturday, that was Jeff Bain, who allowed three runs, including two on Harrison’s home run. The Beavers’ (16-5 overall, 3-3 Pac-12 Conference) three-run lead was short-lived, however, as the Golden Bears (14-6, 4-2) knocked OSU starter Travis Eckert (2-2) out of the game in the second with a four-run frame. WASHINGTON 7, OREGON 4: At Seattle, Steven Packard went 2-for-4 with three RBIs but it wasn’t enough for Oregon as the Ducks dropped their Pac-12 series. Packard gave Oregon a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the top of the second inning and Jakob Goldfarb made it back-to-back homers for a two-run lead. Washington (12-7, 4-2 Pac-12) rallied with two runs off Oregon (11-9, 2-4) starter Kyle Robeniol in the bottom of the second and then added three runs in the fifth on a bases-loaded double to take a 5-2 lead. Packard pulled the Ducks within a run in the sixth with a two-out, two-RBI double that scored Kyle Kasser and Jake Bennett , who both walked. Oregon couldn’t get any closer.
