Manny Mejia also netted a goal for the Black Tornado, which led 1-0 at halftime after Ehlers cashed in on a free kick around the 10th minute. Mountain View evened the score in the second half before North took the lead for good after Ehlers put it in from close range following a play by Rene Torres-Mata in the 60th minute. Torres-Mata drew a penalty kick that Mejia converted late in the match. Defenders Danny Zamores and David Eisenhauer both contributed outstanding efforts. SOUTH MEDFORD 2, BEND 0: Bend scored both goals in the second half of the nonconference season opener at South. The Lava Bears’ Chance Flammang bounced out on breakaway for the first goal in the 50th minute. In the 62nd minute, Niklas Erisson’s corner kick to the front of the goal ricocheted around until Bryant Jolma tapped it in. Panthers center midfielder Kyle Owings did a nice job of running the show for South. Girls Soccer NORTH MEDFORD 2, MOUNTAIN VIEW 0: At Bend, Sydney Thomas scored one goal and had an assist as North Medford opened the season under first-year coach Jeff Thomas. The Black Tornado led 1-0 at halftime on Bailey O’Connor’s score in the 37th minute. O’Connor received a pass from Thomas, then turned and buried a shot from 12 yards out. Sydney Thomas added an insurance goal off an assist from younger sister Sarah Thomas in the 72nd minute. The Black Tornado got excellent play on the defensive side by Mo Cowan, McKenna Wizner and Michala Denn. Goalie Hayley Haas registered the shutout. BEND 7, SOUTH MEDFORD 2: At Bend, South Medford’s Brittany Jensen netted two goals in the season-opening loss. The Panthers trailed 5-1 at halftime. Jensen scored from 8 yards out on an assist from Haylie Durant in the first half. She drew a penalty kick and converted in the second half. Cross Country MARIST INVITATIONAL: At Junction City, St. Mary’s junior Marissa Dobry edged West Salem’s Brooke Chuhlantseff at the last second to win the 5,000-meter Marist Invitational at Richardson Park. In 95-degree weather, Dobry ran 19 minutes, 4 seconds. The transfer from Michigan led for the first two miles before Chuhlantseff began to close the gap around the 4,000-meter mark. The West Salem runner moved into first before Dobry rallied to beat her at the finish line. Phoenix’s Nevina De Luca was fifth (20:00) out of 104 runners, while Crater’s Jordan Monroe finished seventh (20:11), Phoenix’s Emma Amundsen ninth (20:26) and Phoenix’s Danielle Jantzer 13th (21:11). Jesuit won the girls title (52 points) out of 11 schools, Sheldon was second (73), Phoenix third (111), St. Mary’s fourth (120) and Crater seventh (158). On the boys side, Crater senior Devin Rodman finished third out of 134 with a time of 16:32. Phoenix senior Randy Mena was fourth (16:35), Crater’s Tanner Shipley 10th (16:52) and Crater’s Walter Vail 12th (17:00). Sheldon’s Jackson Mestler won (16:12). Jesuit claimed the boys title (48 points), with Marist second (100), Crater third (102), Phoenix sixth (181), Ashland ninth (244) and St. Mary’s 16th (460). Volleyball BUTTE FALLS 3, GILCHRIST 0 : At Butte Falls, Butte Falls used a high serve percentage and cohesive play to post a 25-12, 25-11, 25-21 victory in its Mountain Valley League opener. Shawna Creech delivered four of her five aces in the first set, and Taylor Myers had a service run of seven points in Game 2. Logger (1-0, 1-0 MVL) middles Creech and Taylor Myers led the front-line attack. CHILOQUIN 3, PROSPECT 1: At Chiloquin, serving errors proved costly in the Mountain Valley League opener for Prospect, 25-20, 25-17, 19-25, 25-23. Sophomore middle Baley VanWormer led Prospect (0-2, 0-1 MVL) with nine kills. The sophomore middle blocker was 12 of 12 serving, with two aces.
