Randy Sparacino will take the reins of the Medford Police Department Jan. 1, replacing Tim George, who retired in November after 38 years in the department. Sparacino, deputy chief of the administrative and technical service bureau for the past six years, will serve until a full-time replacement is found, according to a press release issued late Friday by interim Medford City Manager John Hoke. Sparacino, who holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Southern Oregon University, was hired as a bike cadet in 1990 by MPD, and he became a sworn police officer in 1994. He has worked as a patrol officer, field training officer, patrol sergeant, Financial Investigation Section sergeant, Internal Affairs sergeant, patrol lieutenant and administrative lieutenant. In the release, Hoke called Sparacino "a well-rounded leader" with a "strong level of knowledge and experience regarding the financial and administrative operation of the police department."
