Two families' lives and businesses have been destroyed due to the deep pockets of a minority in this country. The Klein family in Oregon and the O'Connor family in Indiana have either lost their businesses or are being threatened with loss of business simply because they practiced their faith. In these cases, the LGBT community was not deprived of life-saving services or police or fire rescue. They were merely told that these enterprises would be unable to provide a cake or cater pizza for same-sex weddings because of their Christian faith. The aforementioned businesses did not refuse the life-giving properties of cookies or pizza to the LGBT community the rest of the year. Shouldn't a family business be allowed to make decisions based on their faith? Liberals claim to be tolerant, but only if one agrees with them. The hypocrisy is overwhelming. How is it that the 1.7 percent of the U.S. population who identify as being gay can dictate how to run a business to the 71 percent of this country who identify as being Christian? If Christians don't stand up for their convictions soon, this vocal, well-funded minority and the government will soon remove all religious freedoms. Chris Sinclair Medford Congrats to school board The Medford School Board is to be congratulated for adopting the AP textbooks recommended by the professionals in the field, namely, the faculty. It is interesting to note that in his objection to the board decision, Joel Marks said "the whole book is biased toward a particular worldview." That is undoubtedly true, since in writing it is impossible to avoid a point of view. But let's be honest. What Mr. Marks really objects to is that the worldview depicted is not biased toward the one he espouses. And thank goodness for that. James Ruston Ashland Appalled and disheartened The recent decision of the Medford School Board to allow teachers to use the U.S. Constitution with the book “American Pageant” by David M. Kennedy and Lisabeth Cohen and other curricula of their liking is appalling to me. When has it become the right of teachers to force their points of view on what they believe are the interpretations of our founding fathers? To use brackets of “The right to bear arms [ie. for military purposes]” and political persuasions of “elite conservatives.” Why not the “elite liberals?” I did not see the latter. These changes will now teach our children how to be more biased and divisive about our country. Teachers can certainly offer other resources to read for their pleasure, but not for requirements in their classes. What's next? Edited versions of the Gettysburg Address, The Pledge of Allegiance and the Star Spangled Banner? How will our children learn any history if their textbooks are changing from the truth? The truth is what we all want and should teach our children. Let the teachers step away from their own political ideology and give our students the truth. Our country is already polarized enough with the pulling away from the Judeo-Christian beliefs of our founders. The Medford School Board needs to meet again to review their biased decision.
