Error-filled eighth hurts T'jacks Photo by Drew Fleming Southern Oregon pitcher Keith Surkont delivers a pitch Thursday against the Portland Rockies. The Southern Oregon Timberjacks still hold down first place in the Northwest League's Southern Division. But the Timberjacks' abysmal eighth-inning defense did them in Thursday night at Miles Field. Portland scored five runs on one hit and three errors to erase Southern Oregon's 6-5 advantage as the Rockies rumbled to a 10-6 triumph. Thanks to Salem-Keizer's 8-3 victory over Eugene, the TJs remained three games atop the Emeralds. Portland's Justin Lincoln began the fateful eighth with a line drive that went right through third baseman Matt Howe's glove for an error. Losing pitcher Alex Negron (0-1) hit the next batter, Greg Catalanotte, before striking out Rich Mahoney. But Negron continued the inning's theme when he walked Jorge Sosa to load the bases. Eric McQueen then delivered the only base hit of the rally, a single to left to send Lincoln home. Billy Gasparino, who homered in the seventh inning to draw Portland to within one run, walked to force in the go-ahead run. Two errors by Timberjacks shortstop Carlos Rosario allowed three more runs to cross the plate. On the bright side, Kirk Asche spanked his 10th home run of the year to stay atop the NWL charts, Jorge Soto crushed his eighth homer and Howe cracked No. 5.
