In other words, the Southern Oregon Raiders of 2015 so far look an awful lot like the Southern Oregon Raiders of 2014, which is a good thing. Quarterbacks Jack Singler, a junior from South Medford, and Kamerun Smith both played well and took the quarterback battle to the next level, Melvin Mason busted off a 61-yard touchdown run and both offenses sharpened up in the second half as the Singler-led White team scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to beat the Smith-led Red team, 34-24, in the Red and White game Friday at Raider Stadium. “It was fun to watch the execution offensively,” Southern Oregon offensive coordinator Ken Fasnacht said. “It’s weird because you break your guys up and you have ones, twos and threes all in one unit, but what was good is both sides looked like an offense. We didn’t look much different than we looked last year in the spring game with all those guys returning. I thought that was probably the most exciting thing, that both sides executed and we looked like we knew what we were doing with their offense.” Down 16-13 midway through the third quarter, Singler guided the White squad 85 yards in nine plays to reclaim the lead, 20-16. The most impressive drive of the day featured two third-down conversions, including a third-and-10 pass from Singler to Matt Retzlaff, also from South Medford. Smith, the sophomore who backed up NAIA offensive player of the year Austin Dodge during SOU’s championship run last season, answered by guiding the Red team 73 yards in five plays, including a Dodge-esque laser that found Adonis Griffin in the corner of the end zone from 25 yards out to give the red team a 27-24 lead. That lead didn’t last long because on the next possession, Mason took a handoff at the White 39, sprinted around the corner and ran away from everybody to put his team in front to stay, 27-24. Tanner Trosin, a transfer from American River Community College who is also in the running to replace Dodge, led the Red team on its next drive, but it fizzled near midfield when he was sacked on third-and-8, then had the ball knocked out of his hand in mid-throw on fourth down. Singler iced the game with both his arm and his feet. His 25-yard bullet to Dominic Giampaoli was tipped away, but a pass interference penalty gave the White team a first down at the Red 27. Then, on third-and-13 at the 31, Singler rolled right, reversed field against a heavy pass rush and found a wide-open Giampaoli at the 10. Giampaoli raced toward the end zone and jumped across the goal line for the final score. Smith led the Red team back into scoring range on his last drive, showing off his arm strength with a 50-yard heave that fell incomplete on the first play, but the clock ran out before it could get into the end zone. “I think I played all right, but I think the whole team in general played fantastic,” Smith said. “The White squad, they obviously got the win, but the (Red) team did their thing and the defense played well, too. There’s always room for improvement and that’s all I’m trying to do, get better. “For me, I was just rooting for the offense because the whole spring, we’re going up against the D and it’s almost like we’re two teams. So now going into the season we’re joined and ready to take on Carroll.” Fasnacht said each of the quarterbacks had their moments Friday and that the battle will continue into the fall. “Today, I would have probably graded it (Singler) 1, (Smith) 1A and (Trosin) 2,” he said. “Again, it’s an unfair comparison in a way because you don’t know who’s out there and what personal groups they’re with, but (Smith) and (Singler) have a little more time in the offense and that part showed, and both of them executed some drives when it mattered. And (Trosin’s) got a start, he’s an electric kind of runner. So it’s not going to get sorted out now, it’s going to get sorted probably going into the summer months.
