LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Sept. 6 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Sep. 6, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Sep. 6, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Restrict leaf blowers Cities that are too cowardly to ban leaf-blowers outright (Mill Valley and Santa Monica ban all leaf-blowers) or too cowardly to ban at least gasoline-powered leaf-blowers (Belvedere, Berkeley, Beverly Hills, Carmel, and Claremont — to stop at "c" in California — ban gasoline leaf-blowers) can cleverly allow industrial gardening on only the same day as garbage pick-up. On that day, people of brain, sleep, speech, or telephone can abandon that section of the city, work off-site, or move in with friends who have a different garbage day. As of now, no jurisdiction in Oregon attempts any regulation of leaf-blowers; one would think that at least Ashland would feel comfortable being among the above cities. The legal pretext for banning gasoline leaf-blowers is obvious in Oregon: The self-immolation risk for gardeners is even more serious than for pumping your own fuel at a post-service station. My source for ban information is Consumer Reports. Hunter Greer Ashland Ugly truth exposed The puerile ranting of a grotesquely tonsured demagogue has exposed the ugly truth that bigotry, racism and ignorance are alive and thriving in the U.S.A. Donald Trump's poll numbers confirm that active strains of "Archie Bunkerism" have survived. Seemingly unable to comprehend that Trump's unabashed prejudices echo and reinforce perceptions that had much to do with voter rejection in the past two elections, the thundering silence and failure of his primary opponents in not renouncing Trump's utterances as antithetical to Republican Party values amply demonstrate the inadequacy of the entire group as presidential timber. The utilization of inflammatory rhetoric ("Mexicans are raping our women and taking jobs from Americans") lays bare an appalling ignorance of a complex problem created by our nation's unregulated thirst for cheap, unorganized labor. His solution ("We'll ship them all back!") ignites visions of Nazi storm troopers. Incomprehensibly, Trump's competitors continue to squander a golden opportunity to demonstrate statesmanship (and basic decency) by not decrying bigotry and an inhumane solution to a manageable problem. Until one of them musters the courage to do so, the GOP may be doomed to wander a wilderness of its own making. Jon Huntsman, wherefore art thou? Bob Warren Medford Thanks for memories Thanks to columnist Peggy Dover for bringing back fond memories of forgetfulness: "Case of randomly misplaced objects." In 40-some years of driving I have lost numerous sunglasses, a couple of drinks, one watch and one wallet, from what I remember. On the bright side, a box full of record albums left on the roof of my old Mercury Bobcat survived a trip from Roseburg to Winston one evening in 1980. I was relieved I did not have to explain to the radio station owner I worked for how I lost dozens of his albums. Thanks for the memories, Peggy.
