Can a dog be left outside an unfenced yard without supervision? Is there a fine? — M.J., Medford Thanks for the canine query, M.J. We asked Medford police Lt. Mike Moran, and he said in the city limits, it is illegal for Frisky to be off a leash outside, unless in the dog park. He said if the dog is sitting calmly in its front yard, police don’t have a problem with that. He said when they get a call for dogs at large, they refer it to Jackson County Animal Control, unless the dog presents an immediate hazard. Angela Romero, the dispatcher for animal control, said when they get calls for off-leash dogs, they send an officer out. For first-time violators (the human ones), they like to verbally inform them of the regulations. If it happens again, they often issue citations, anywhere from $55 to $600, depending on the offense, she said. For example, if the dog is chasing bikes or people, it’ll cost more. And if it turns out the dog is not licensed, the officer will take it to the shelter. All dogs are required to be licensed. To report a dog at large, call Jackson County Animal Control at 774-6655.
