The Jacksonville resident has opened Sage Landscape Supply, carrying everything from pavers and retaining wall materials to lighting and outdoor fireplaces at 500 Rossanley Drive in Medford. Haynes' family moved from the Rogue Valley to the Southwest as he approached his teenage years. Later, he began his work in the landscape field in Kansas City, and it was there that he came to appreciate outdoor living and its possibilities. "When I was a landscape contractor, I began to formulate all these different ideas," he said. "Being able to create these amazing outdoor spaces for people and trying to put together a lot of the different ideas I had seen, but I saw them offered at a whole bunch of different stores instead of one location." Housed in a former agriculture feed facility on the northwest corner of Sage Road and Highway 238, the 1,600-square-foot showroom and surrounding third-of-an-acre features an array of high-end outdoor construction, decorative materials and furniture. The enterprise will carry trees and shrubs from Shooting Star Nursery. "We wanted to work with a nursery," he said. "We didn't want to be a nursery." While Haynes might be out of the landscape business, setting up shop has given him a chance to put a personal touch on a forlorn spot. "I want them to come to a yard of a bunch of pallets, pavers and rock," Haynes said. "I want them to come to a place they enjoy being, we're in the process of creating that." Haynes considers Oregon more conducive to outdoor living than Arizona or Kansas, and on par with the best of the West. "We live in one of the most premier places in America for outdoor living," he said. "We have these amazing, long summer days, we don't have humidity, and we have this beautiful weather." Even in the winter, outdoor living fits right in. "It's not as dramatic or intense in the winter, so you can create outdoor living places that can be used year round," Haynes said. "It's much easier here than in other geographic regions of the country." The opportunity to transition from the field to showroom came when Atlanta-based Belgard, maker of pavers and retaining walls, wanted an enhanced presence in Southern Oregon. The nationwide operator has production and warehouse facilities in Stockton, Calif., and Spokane, Wash. "I had thought about this before and turned down some other opportunities," Haynes said. "But this was too good to pass up."  His primary market will be contractors and former competitors in the landscaping arena. "It's a niche market that allows us to work with both people doing new construction and doing remodels," he said. "It hasn't been super-well-marketed in our area.
